If you’ve been paying any attention to the executive revolving door at Wizards of the Coast, you might feel like you need to roll a History check just to keep track of who’s actually running the show. In July 2026, we saw President John Hight step down just two years into his tenure and prior to that, President Cynthia Williams also stepped down after two years in the role.
Now, however, it seems that Hasbro may have found the right candidate from its existing roster, with the company announcing that Dan Ayoub will be taking over as President of Wizards of the Coast. In an official press release the company noted that Ayoub “will lead Magic: The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, Duel Masters and Hasbro Digital Games including Exodus and Warlock.”
Notably, Ayoub has been with Wizards of the Coast for over four years, most recently serving as VP of the D&D franchise and aggressively pushing a number of new initiatives. Below, we take a closer look at what this means for the future of the game.

Who is the new Wizards of the Coast President Dan Ayoub?
Dan Ayoub is a Canadian-born senior executive with extensive experience in the video game industry. Before joining Wizards of the Coast he spent 11 years at Microsoft, serving as an Executive Producer and Studio Head for 343 Industries, where he oversaw the popular Halo video game franchise.
Prior to that, Ayoub served in various roles at a number of major AAA video game studios, including Ubisoft, Electronic Arts and Disney. In 2019, while still working as an executive, he also graduated from the MIT Sloan School of Management, where he specialized in Artificial Intelligence; something which is likely of interest to Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks, who remains extremely bullish on the application of AI in games.
In 2022, Ayoub joined Wizards of the Coast in the position of VP, Head of Studios, and was largely responsible for overseeing external collaborations and internal development on several Dungeons & Dragons video games, including the recent opening of a new studio in Montreal. More recently, as the VP of franchise, he was a key driver of the new D&D Universes Beyond and D&D Icons lines.
Notably, Ayoub has said he has been a D&D fan and player since the age of 12.

Why was Dan Ayoub appointed President?
According to Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks, the decision to elevate Ayoub came down primarily to his proven track record and experience with Wizards of the Coast’s IPs.
“Dan has the passion and leadership caliber to take Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro Digital Games into its next chapter,” said Cocks. “He understands what our games mean to the people who play them and what it takes to build great teams and experiences. His promotion reflects one of my top priorities: developing our people. I couldn’t think of a better match to lead these businesses, and I’m excited for the future with him at the helm.”
Ayoub himself echoed this sentiment in the official press release, emphasizing a commitment to the community: “I’m honored to lead Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro Digital Games, and grateful to Chris and the leadership team for this opportunity. Magic and D&D have been part of my life for as long as I can remember, and the teams behind them are among the best in the world. We’ll put fans first, respect the artists and creators who make these worlds come alive, and set an ambitious course for growth across tabletop and digital. I can’t wait to get started.”

Final thoughts
Handing the keys to someone who is embedded in the trenches of the D&D ecosystem suggests Hasbro wants a steady hand rather than an outside disruption. However, stepping into the role also means facing some major challenges. The D&D brand is still navigating a bumpy road following the OGL controversy, the failure of Project Sigil and recent efforts of D&D staff to unionize. It remains to be seen if Ayoub will be able to steer the game and the brand in a new direction. Or at the very least, last longer this his predecessors.
