John Hight Steps Down as President of Wizards of the Coast

In surprising news, a recent US SEC filing posted on the Hasbro website notes that John Hight is stepping down as President of Wizards of the Coast. The transition will take place on September 1st, although Hight will remain in an advisory role with the company.
Hight has been in the position for just two years, having joined Wizards of the Coast in August 2024 after taking over for Cynthia Williams. Prior to that, Hight has spent almost 20 years working in the video game industry, including 13 years in a senior role at Blizzard.

Who is John Hight?
Before taking the reins at Wizards of the Coast, Hight served an executive at Blizzard Entertainment, where he managed the Warcraft franchise and played a key role in several high-profile game releases, including overseeing the development of titles such as Hearthstone and Diablo III: Reaper of Souls.
His background in video games was a major part of his hiring as the company began a shift towards digital products via D&D Beyond, as well as aggressively producing video games, both in-house and with partners.
Why is John Hight stepping down as President of Wizards of the Coast?
It’s not entirely clear why Hight is leaving the role. In a statement provided to GamesIndustry.biz, Wizards of the Coast noted only:
“After two years as President of Wizards of the Coast, John Hight is transitioning from the role, effective September 1. We’re deeply grateful for his leadership and the contributions he’s made to our teams and our games during his tenure. John will continue to support Wizards in an advisory capacity while pursuing other creative and professional opportunities he’s passionate about.
“There is no change to the strength of the Wizards business. Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons continue to perform incredibly well, consistent with our most recent earnings release, and our upcoming 2027 video game slate, including Exodus and Warlock remains on track.
“We’re launching an internal and external search for John’s successor and will share updates as appropriate.”
It’s possible, however, that Hight’s departure may be the result of a recent $56 million write-down that Hasbro recently recorded in relation to a number of cancelled video game projects, almost all of which were under Hight’s purview.
The timing does also seem sudden, given that Wizards of the Coast is giving its D&D Vision Keynote at Gen Con in just two days.
Final thoughts
Being the President of Wizards of the Coast is clearly a challenging position. And one with a high attrition rate, as Hight’s predecessor Cynthia Williams herself only lasted two years in the role. It remains to be seen who will step into the role next and how they’ll shape the future of Dungeons & Dragons.
