New Dragonlance Novel “War Wizard” Coming This Summer

Back in August of 2024 we first reported that a new trilogy of Dragonlance novels was in the works from original authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman entitled Dragonlance Legacies which would be published under a new “classic Dragonlance” label.

We now have more details on the first book in the series. Entitled War Wizard, the book will focus on Huma and Magius, two legendary heroes from the lore of Krynn who lived over a thousand years before the events of the War of the Lance. The book will be coming out in early August 2026, but you can pre-order it now from local game stores, book stores and on Amazon.

So what can fans expect with this new take on an old tale? Below, we break out all the details.

What is “Dragonlance: War Wizard” about?

War Wizard will focus primarily on the character of Magius, an incredibly powerful wizard who rose to prominence during the Third Dragon War (roughly 1,400 years before the War of the Lance). The book, however, will chronicle the early days of Magius’ life as a young man growing up in Solamnia; a region known for its powerful order of knights and its mistrust of all things magical.

Possessing a keen mind and an innate gift for the arcane arts, Magius faces discrimination and heartbreak as he struggles to become a powerful War Wizard. His only companion is Huma, a young recruit who will also become of the greatest warriors in all of Krynn.

The book follows the unlikely duo as they try and find their place in the world while also facing the looming threat of the dragon goddess Takhisis.

How much is “Dragonlance: War Wizard”?

The hardcover version of the book will retail for $30 USD, while the Kindle version will sell for $14.99 USD. An Audiobook version will also be released on Audible for around $25 USD.

When will the new Dragonlance novel be released?

War Wizard will be officially available on August 4th, 2026, at which point you’ll be able to pick it up online and at physical retailers.

What other Dragonlance novels have been recently released?

Until 2022, it had been over a decade since a Dragonlance novel had been published. This was due primarily to an protracted lawsuit between Wizards of the Coast and authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman over a contract dispute. The legal issue, however, was eventually resolved and Weis and Hickman released the Dragonlance Destinies trilogy which consists of the following books:

Final Thoughts

It’s great to see the literary side of Dragonlance continuing on over 40 years after it was first created. It’s also interesting to see original authors Margaret Weis and Tracy HIckman offering a fresh take on two legendary figures in the lore of Kyrnn (both of whom have been featured in previous books). Notably, in October 2025, both Weis and Hickman appeared at Wizards of the Coast headquarters along with actor and D&D super fan Joe Manganiello, although it’s not clear whether it was related to the new trilogy of books or some other upcoming project.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on War Wizard in the days ahead and will offer a complete review closer to launch. In the meantime, you can pre-order a copy now from local game stores, book stores and on Amazon.
