D&D Cranks Up the Critical Hits With New “Playlist of Holding”

In one of the more unusual outputs from the Dungeons & Dragons community, Wizards of the Coast has just released their first ever Playlist of Holding, a collection of songs selected by fans and designed to capture the spirit of D&D. The eclectic list includes everything from 80s hair metal to cinematic soundtracks and everything in between, all of which can be used at the table to set a scene or serve as inspiration during DM prep.

So is this bundle of beats worth pressing play on? Below, we crank up all the details.

What is the D&D Playlist of Holding?

The Playlist of Holding is a list of music created in October 2025 by Wizards of the Coast for their Dungeons & Dragons Spotify profile. Named after the iconic Bag of Holding, the playlist contains over 100 curated tracks which were submitted by players from around the world via the official D&D Discord and social channels.

Among the song are familiar rock and pop classics “Master of Puppets” by Metallica, “Immigrant Song” by Led Zeppelin and “Holding Out for a Hero” by Bonnie Tyler. It also contains some more esoteric choices, including “Big Blue” by the retro video game inspired band Powerglove, “Dungeon Master” by the heavy metal nerdcore band Visigoth and WIZARD by the fantasy doom metal band Castle Rat (whose aesthetic is heavily inspired by 80s D&D artwork and adventures). Yet the Playlist of Holding also has a number of orchestral songs that are more atmospheric in nature and would work well during a typical D&D session, including “The Anvil of Crom” from The Conan the Barbarian movie, Carmina Burana: O Fortuna as performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the theme song to the fantasy movie Willow.

Final Thoughts

Music has long been a part of the D&D experience, with DMs oftening bringing it to the table to help immerse players. With the Playlist of Holding, however, Wizards of the Coast has actually made an attempt to officially capture the sonic vibes of the game. And while not every track is likely to wind up at your table, there are some solid options here that are definite critical hits.

Cameron Nichols is a Senior Editor who lives in Boston, Massachusetts, and has been playing D&D since the early 90s, when he was introduced by his older brother and cut his teeth on AD&D 2nd Edition. Since then he’s played virtually every RPG he could get his nerdy little mitts on (including a weird Goth phase in the early 2000s when he rocked Vampire: The Masquerade pretty hard). His favorite D&D campaign setting is the Forgotten Realms and his favorite character to play was a Half-Orc Barbarian named Grug (who was unfortunately devoured by a gelatinous cube).
