New Glow in the Dark WizKids Minis Light Up the Underdark

A shadowy realm deep beneath the earth filled with twisting tunnels and malevolent monsters, the Underdark is an iconic location in Dungeons & Dragons lore. Now, popular third-party accessory maker WizKids has released a new line of miniatures that celebrates the many creatures found in its shadowy depths.
D&D Icons of the Realms: Underdark Expeditions is a new line that features pre-painted minis based on classic subterranean monsters such as Hook Horrors, Myconids, Darkmantles and Drow, to name just a few. The set also uses a new type of paint known as “DungeonGlo,” which allows the minis to glow in the dark.

What’s included in the new WizKids Underdark Expeditions minis?
The new Underdark Expedition set contains 44 pre-painted miniatures based on creatures from several D&D sources, including the 2024 Monster Manual. The line of minis includes a number of classic Underdark creatures including Gelatinous Cube, Umber Hulk, Grell and Carrion Crawler.
Notably, this is the 36th set in WizKids D&D Icon of the Realms miniatures series and is the first to use their new DungeonGlo paint. Not all figures have this new glow-in-the-dark paint, however, and in some cases only certain parts of the figure are covered. It’s also worth noting that to get the full effect you have to first place the mini under a UV light to charge the glow.
How much are the new WizKids Underdark Expedition minis?
There are two product versions you available. You can buy an individual Booster Brick for $19.99 USD or pick up an 8 pack for $159.92 USD (not including shipping and handling). Each Brick contains 1 large miniature and 3 medium or small miniatures, so you get a fairly decent range to choose from.
So far, WizKids prices have remained stable, but it’s not clear if that will be the case going forward giving the tariffs that have been put in place by the US government and which are negatively impacting countless board game and accessory publishers.
When are the new Underdark Expeditions miniatures coming out?
The new minis will be released in late May 2025, but are available for pre-order now. While you can find them online, you should be able to pick them from most major retailers (including local game stores) around the same time.
If you do want to make sure you get yours on time, you may want to pre-order them as soon as possible.
Final Thoughts
The Underdark offers some of the most incredible monsters in D&D lore, so it’s great to see them getting some time in the spotlight with this new set of WizKids minis. And while these nasty creatures are at their best in the dark, almost all of them can work in other environments too, offering plenty of usability at the table. The new glow-in-the-dark paint is also a nice touch, that really seems to bring the minis to life and is something hopefully we’ll see more of from WizKids in the future.
