At this year’s Gen Con, Wizards of the Coast officially unveiled a new range of features on D&D Beyond to help users find groups to play with in-person and online.
The initiative includes a new D&D Event Finder, which will show players sessions taking place at local stores, along with a new D&D Discord channel specifically designed to connect online players. In addition, Wizards of the Coast has announced a special, limited-time promotion with online game matchmaker StartPlaying that allows you to find and join a game for just $0.99 USD. What is the D&D Event Finder?
The new D&D Event Finder is an option built directly into D&D Beyond that allows users to find local in-person Dungeons & Dragons games in their area, with the option to sort by any location in the world.
The feature also includes a list of stores that are part of the Wizards Play Network who are running games and selling official D&D products.
What is the D&D Beyond partnership with StartPlaying?
D&D Beyond confirmed a new partnership with StartPlaying, the popular online platform that connects players directly with professional, highly-trained Dungeon Masters. Hosted on StartPlaying, the tool asks users to submit their location, availability and the type of game they want to participate in and then attempts to find a match.
As part of the launch of the new partnership, Wizards of the Coast announced a limited-time promotion letting first-time plaers find and join a game on StartPlaying for $0.99 USD.
How does the new Discord Find a Game Feature work?
D&D Beyond has also rebuilt its official Discord server to include a dedicated “Find a Game” channel, letting players looking to join a group connect directly with others inside Discord.
The new channel also includes advice from the official D&D moderator team on how to find a group and play both online and in-person.
Final Thoughts
One of the biggest impediments to the growth of Dungeons & Dragons is just how difficult it can be for both new and experienced players to find a group. With the new D&D Beyond Event Finder, the StartPlaying partnership and the Discord expansion, Wizards of the Coast is definitely taking a step in the right direction.
