Giant Skull D&D Video Game Gets the Axe

Back in June of 2025, Wizards of the Coast announced that a new D&D video game was in development from Giant Skull, the studio co-founded by Stig Asmussen, who has been a director on a number of popular video games, including God of War III and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

A recent Bloomberg article, however, has reported that the game was actually canceled earlier this year, with the news only now being announced to the public. It marks yet another casualty in a long line of D&D video games that have gone through significant development, only to have the plug pulled, with Hasbro even going so far as to cancel five D&D games in one fell swoop back in January 2023. More recently, Swedish video game developer Starbreeze scrapped a D&D game they were working on, citing a potential loss of revenue.

Below, we take a look at what happened to Giant Skull’s project and what this may mean for future Dungeons & Dragons video games.

What was the Giant Skull D&D video game about?

According to the Variety article published in June 2025, the untitled D&D video game from Giant Skull would have been a single-player action-adventure set within the D&D universe.

At the time, Giant Skull co-founder Stig Asmussen wrote that “Our goal is to craft a rich new ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ universe filled with immersive storytelling, heroic combat and exhilarating traversal that players will fully embrace.” Asmussen had even gone so far as to recruit a number of industry veterans who had worked with him in the past to develop the project.

Why was the Giant Skull D&D video game canceled?

According to the Bloomberg article published on May 19th, 2026, Wizards of the Coast pulled out of their publishing deal with Giant Skull earlier this year, with a spokesperson simply stating: “We assess concepts at every stage of development” and that “While we decided not to pursue an early concept from Giant Skull, we have great respect for Stig Asmussen and his team and value our ongoing relationship.”

They did, however, add that they are still taking new pitches from Giant Skull and in the same Bloomberg article, Asmussen noted that he had enjoyed working with Wizards of the Coast and that he was still talking to people at the company about future publishing deals.

It’s not uncommon for video games to be canceled, given the high production costs involved, with some estimates suggesting at least a 50% attrition rate.

Who is Giant Skull?

Giant Skull is a triple-A video game studio that was co-founded in 2023 by Stig Asmussen, who has previously served as the game director of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order for Respawn Entertainment and EA. Asmussen had also previously worked as the game director on God of War III at Sony Santa Monica. In addition to Asmussen, the Giant Skull leadership team also features a number of major video game veterans, including lead producer Lauren McLemore, art director Patrick Murphy, CTO Jon Carr and design director Jeff Magers.

The new Dungeons & Dragons video game would have been the first official title launched by Giant Skull, although based on what was presented in the Bloomberg article it appears the company will continue to exist and will be working on other projects.

What other D&D Video Games Are in the Works?

Currently, there are a number of D&D video game projects in various stages of development, including:

  • Untitled Hasbro Game: Wizards of the Coast has also indicated that an in-house studio at Hasbro is currently developing a currently unnamed D&D game, although little information has been revealed about what it will consist of.
  • Untitled D&D survival sim: In development from Gameloft Montreal, the studio best known for the popular Disney Dreamlight Valley, this new D&D title will be an action-focused survival-life sim set in the Forgotten Realms.
  • Untitled Saber Interactive game: The developers of the popular Space Marine 2 video game are also working on a new Hasbro title that may be D&D related.
  • Baldur’s Gate 4: Wizards of the Coast has recently confirmed that a BG4 is in the works (although a studio and release date has not yet been announced).

Final Thoughts

Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast has been increasingly focused on video game development over the past few years, putting significant resources into projects like the upcoming Exodus sci-fi RPG and also beginning to develop their own internal projects. It’s likely executives (and shareholders) are looking to recreate the success of Baldur’s Gate 3, which netted Hasbro over $90 million in licensing fees alone.

Of course, creating a highly profitable triple-A video game is easier said than done, even if it’s using a popular IP like Dungeons & Dragons, so it’s likely Giant Skull’s game won’t be the only D&D project to face cancelation in the years ahead.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on this story and will update this page with more information as it’s made available.
