New DnD Video Game Coming from Gameloft Montreal

Video game studio Gameloft Montreal, maker of the popular all-ages online sim Disney Dreamlight Valley, has announced that they’re working on a new officially licensed Dungeons & Dragons video game in partnership with Wizards of the Coast.

The announcement comes at a time when interest in DnD video games is at an all-time high, thanks to the hit Baldur’s Gate 3, which broke sales records and earned the prestigious Game of the Year title at the 2023 Game Awards.

So just what can we expect to see from Gameloft’s upcoming DnD title? Below we break out everything we know so far.

What is Gameloft’s New DnD Video Game About?

So far little is know about Gameloft Montreal’s upcoming (and still untitled) DnD video game. We do know that it will be available for PC and consoles, will be set in the Forgotten Realms and will feature cooperative gameplay built around a hybrid of survival, life simulation and action RPG elements.

In a recent announcement on Twitter/X, Gameloft also noted that: “Players can expect an adventure where the rich lore of this legendary franchise meets real-time survival in a unique campaign of resilience, camaraderie, and danger at nearly every turn.”

When is the new Gameloft DnD video game coming out?

No official date has been set, but the game will likely take several years to be completed (for context, Baldur’s Gate 3 took over six years to develop). Notably, a DnD video game would be radical departure from Gameloft Montreal who is best known for Disney Dreamlight Valley, a popular but fairly tame title that none the less features a massive brand and a complex online ecosystem.

Just because development has begun on the game also doesn’t guarantee that it will be finished. In fact, it’s not uncommon for game titles to be cancelled well into their development. In 2023 for example, Wizards of the Coast cancelled five DnD video games, all of which are in various stages of development.

Final Thoughts

It’s worth noting that Gameloft Montreal isn’t alone in creating their upcoming DnD video game. In recent months, a new DnD game was announced from Starbreeze Studios, along with a DnD VR game from Resolution Games. It’s also not surprising given that Hasbro is facing growing financial pressures, with one of the only bright lights being licensing fees from Baldur’s Gate 3. As such, we can likely expect even more announcements about upcoming DnD video games to be rolling out in the months ahead.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on this new story and will update this page as we learn more about the new Gameloft title.

Cameron Nichols is a Senior Editor who lives in Boston, Massachusetts, and has been playing D&D since the early 90s, when he was introduced by his older brother and cut his teeth on AD&D 2nd Edition. Since then he’s played virtually every RPG he could get his nerdy little mitts on (including a weird Goth phase in the early 2000s when he rocked Vampire: The Masquerade pretty hard). His favorite D&D campaign setting is the Forgotten Realms and his favorite character to play was a Half-Orc Barbarian named Grug (who was unfortunately devoured by a gelatinous cube).
