Free D&D Adventure Released for International Day of Play 2026

Wizards of the Coast has just released a free D&D adventure for the upcoming International Day of Play, an annual event created by the United Nations to raise awareness and promote play as a fundamental human right for children. Entitled Borderlands Quest: Dagger Danger, the adventure is now available as a free download on D&D Beyond.

The content will also be featured in upcoming D&D International Day of Play events, which run from June 9th to 30th at participating game stores in the US. These all-ages events are designed to introduce younger players to D&D and are co-sponsored by Dominos, which is offering $50 gift cards to select stores that join in the program. Notably, last year WotC ran a similar program, including releasing the free adventure Borderlands Quest: Goblin Trouble.

So just what kind of danger and adventure awaits with this celebration of play? Below, we take a look at all the details.

What is Borderland Quest: Dagger Danger about?

Borderlands Quest: Dagger Danger is a short one-shot adventure for four to five Level 1 characters that can be run in about 1 to 2 hours and is designed to teach new players the basics of Dungeons & Dragons using the new 2024 rules (now referred to as D&D 5.5E). It’s also meant to serve as a tie-in to the Heroes of the Borderlands D&D starter set, which was released in September 2025.

The adventure kicks off at the legendary Keep on the Borderlands. Players are hired to journey to Kobold Cave (a dangerous section of the infamous Caves of Chaos) to recover a valuable heirloom dagger that was recently dropped there by a local adventurer. As the name suggests, the cave is infested with kobolds, along with a variety of other monsters, traps and bizarre creatures.

The adventure features a classic five-room dungeon, along with a map, three new pieces of art and monster stat blocks. Notably, the adventure was written by veteran D&D designer Shawn Merwin, who recently joined Wizards of the Coast as a full-time contractor.

What is International Day of Play?

International Day of Play is an annual event started by the United Nations in 2024 and now held each year on June 11th. The event is described by the UN as being designed to “preserve, promote, and prioritize playing so that all people, especially children, can reap the rewards and thrive to their full potential.” It’s also focused on raising awareness of play as a fundamental human right under Article 31 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Wizards of the Coast (and parent company Hasbro) have participated in International Day of Play since it was first started, running a number of events and providing significant donations and volunteer efforts in both 2024 and 2025.

It’s great to see Wizards of the Coast and the D&D brand continuing to support International Day of Play and releasing a free adventure as a way to connect with both new and existing fans.
