D&D Beyond Releases Free Adventure “The Tenebrous Stone”

For a limited time only Wizards of the Coast is offering a free D&D adventure that will also be appearing in their upcoming DM supplement Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerûn. Entitled The Tenebrous Stone, the short module is designed for Level 3 characters, with players facing down a group of dark cultists near a remote farming settlement. The digital only product also includes a free map which can be used with D&D Beyond Maps VTT.

You can grab the adventure now for free on D&D Beyond, but it will likely only be available for a limited time as Wizards of the Coast often takes these releases down after a few months. Below, we take a closer look at all the details.

What is the “Forgotten Realms: The Tenebrous Stone” adventure about?

The Tenebrous Stone is an level 3 one-shot adventure that can be run in 2 to 3 hours and uses the new D&D 2024 rules. The story takes place around the farming village of Helmsdale in the kingdom of Damara located in the North Eastern corner of the Forgotten Realms. Players are tasked to with tracking down a missing monk from the nearby Monastery of the Yellow Rose who was investigating a mysterious stone quarry that he believes may have been cursed.

Players will have to navigate the shadowy depths of the quarry, facing down undead, a deadly cult and an ancient demonic stone that emits fear and despair. Notably, the adventure uses the new simplified format that was introduced in the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide, with brief high level notes and a break out of key encounters, all of which is supposed to minimize DM prep.

Final Thoughts

It’s great to see Wizards of the Coast giving a sneak peak of the types of adventures we can expect to see in the upcoming Adventures in Faerûn supplement. In reading it over, it seems like a short, but solid module and something that could be easily run as a one shot or dropped into an existing campaign.

You can pick up the adventure for free on a limited time on D&D Beyond and pick up Adventures in Faerûn now from your local game store, D&D Beyond and Amazon.
