New D&D Video Game Studio Opening in Montreal

Hasbro has just announced that they’re launching a new video game studio in Montreal, Canada with a primary focus on developing new Dungeons & Dragons video games. The studio, which is being referred to simply as Wizards of the Coast Studios Inc., is expected to hire over 200 new employees in the coming months and will be run by recently appointed VP of Franchise, Dan Ayoub.

The news comes hot on the heels of a number of major new D&D video game projects which Wizards of the Coast has been overseeing with both internal teams and third-party studios. Wizards of the Coast has also been bringing a significant amount of video game design talent, including recently acquiring an entire team of recently laid off EA developers.

So just what does this mean for the D&D brand and any future video games? Below, we take a closer look at everything we know so far.

What will the new D&D video game studio be working on?

So far, it’s not entirely clear what video game projects Wizards of the Coast Studios Inc. will be working on and it will likely take several months for them to hire up and start building out a development pipeline. We do, however, know that they won’t be replacing Invoke Studios (developers of the much maligned 2021 video game Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance) which is also owned by Hasbro and located in Montreal. In fact, the new WotC studio will be located close to Invoke in the city’s downtown area.

One potential project the new studio may be working on is Baldur’s Gate 4, which Wizards of the President John Hight recently confirmed will be happening at some point in the near future after developer Larian Studios announced they would no longer be working on the D&D brand. It’s also possible that the studio may be supporting a number of other D&D video game projects which are currently in various states of development either internally at Hasbro or with third-party studios.

What D&D Video Games Are in the Works?

While we don’t yet know what the new Wizards of the Coast Montreal studio will be working on, there are in fact a number of other D&D video games in development, including:

  • Untitled Hasbro Game: Wizards of the Coast has also indicated that an in-house studio at Hasbro is currently developing a currently unnamed D&D game, although little information has been revealed about what it will consist of.
  • Untitled D&D surival sim: In development from Gameloft Montreal, the studio best known for the popular Disney Dreamlight Valley, this new D&D title will be an action-focused survival-life sim set in the Forgotten Realms.
  • Project Baxter: In development from Starbreeze Enterainment, who are best known for their shooter Payday 3, little has been revealed about this upcoming D&D game (code named “Project Baxter”) other than that it is a co-operative multiplayer game and slated for release in 2026 for consoles and PC.
  • Untitled Saber Interactive game: The developers of the popular Space Marine 2 video game are also working on a new Hasbro title that may be D&D related.
  • Battlemarked: is an upcoming co-op virtual reality RPG game set in the world of D&D. The game is built using the Demeo Action Role Playing System, which involves tactical turn-based combat for up to four players.
  • Untitled Giant Skull Game: The new game studio (which was founded in 2023 by several video game veterans) is working on a single-player action adventure title using the Dungeons & Dragons license.

Final Thoughts

Wizards of the Coast has been aggressively focusing on new D&D video game projects following the critical and financial success of Baldur’s Gate 3, so it’s not too surprising that they’re investing heavily in a new studio that will remain under their control. What new D&D games the Wizards of the Coast Studio is working on, however, remains to be seen.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on this story and will update this page with new information as it’s made available.
