Whether you’re a veteran Dungeon Master looking for a quick side quest or a new group hoping to try out Dungeons & Dragons for the first time, one-shots are a great way to experience the game. As the name suggests, these self-contained adventures are designed to be wrapped up in a single session, making them ideal for both beginners and experienced players.
The good news that are plenty of high-quality DnD one-shots that are available completely for free online. Below, we’ve put together a few of our favorites, covering everything from classic dungeon crawls to offbeat encounters and everything in between.

10. Uni and the Hunt for the Lost Horn
The first official DnD one shot to use the new 2024 rules, Uni and the Hunt for the Lost Horn is also completely free. Designed for Level 4 characters, players take on the role of the cast of the 1980s DnD cartoon series. Together, they must stop the evil wizard Kelek from conducting a ritual using the stolen horn of their trusty unicorn sidekick Uni. It’s a fast and fun one shot with plenty of nostalgia throw into the mix.

9. Scions of Elemental Evil
Set in the world of Greyhawk, this free DnD one shot also uses the new 2024 rules. Designed for level 4 characters, the adventure is centered on the legendary Temple of Elemental Evil (based on the groundbreaking module from 1985). Players must stop a sinister new cult which has emerged from the shadows and threatens to unleash a powerful new entity that could threaten all of Oerth.

8. Peril in Pinebrook
Designed to teach new and younger DnD players the basics of the game, this one shot also features plenty of action, social encounters and exploration. The story centers around a newborn silver dragon which the players must return to its mother. Along the way they’ll navigate dangerous traps, vicious monsters and an angry adult dragon. It’s a great one shot for Level 1 characters and a perfect introduction the world of DnD.

7. Intro to Stormwreck Isle
Containing the first introductory sections of the popular Dragons of Stormwreck Isle adventure, this standalone release contains a solid mix of action and exploration. The story focuses on an ancient conflict between the good metallic dragons and the evil chromatic dragons, with players caught in the middle. While you can easily run the whole thing as a satisfying one shot for Level 1 characters, if players are interested you can also pick up where you left off and turn it into a larger campaign.

6. Defiance in Phlan
Designed for 1st level characters as part of the official D&D Adventurers League, this one shot takes place in the city of Phlan in the Forgotten Realms. Players are tasked by stopping the Cult of the Dragon from spreading their influence. While the entire adventure can be wrapped up in a single session, players can also take on five different missions, adding a fair bit of versatility and player agency to the adventure.

5. Death House
An introductory adventure for the larger Curse of Strahd campaign, Death House can also be run as a standalone one shot. The adventure is designed for Level 1 characters and can be completed in 3 to 4 hours. The story takes place in the cursed land of Barovia of Ravenloft fame, with trapped in a mysterious manor. It’s a bloody blend of horror, action, mystery and puzzle solving that can be used to kick off a new campaign or run as a one-and-done.

4. The Delian Tomb
Based on a concept from award-winning RPG designer Matt Colville of MCDM fame, The Delian Tomb become one of the most famous DnD one shots in recent years (including recently appearing in the new Draw Steel system). Designed for Level 1 characters it can be completed in just 3 to 4 hours and has players investigating a mysterious tomb, where they discover hidden enemies, traps and an ancient secret. It’s a great adventure for first time players or for a group of seasoned veterans looking to kick off a new campaign.

3. Frozen Sick
This free one shot has become incredibly popular over the years, thanks to its solid adventure structure and the fact that it was developed by Critical Role’s Matt Mercer. The adventure is designed for 1st to 4th level characters and involves the characters trying to stop a bizarre plague that is spreading among the inhabitants of a remote ice-locked village. It’s an amazing blend of of exploration, combat, puzzle solving and dungeon crawling.

2. The Secrets of Skyhorn Lighthouse
Created by popular RPG designer Kelsey Dionne (the creator of the popular Shadowdark game system), this incredible DnD one shot is designed for Level 5 characters and can be wrapped up in about 5-7 hours. The adventure takes place near a remote lighthouse, with players facing down pirates, man-eating sharks and slippery eelman. It’s a fast and fun adventure, that blends mystery, action and exploration.

1. Wild Sheep Chase
If you’re looking for a free one shot that’s a little more whacky, then Wild Sheep Chase has you covered. This adventure is perfect for characters level 1-4 and can be completed in about 3-6 hour. The story features a powerful sorcerer that’s been magically transformed into a sheep, with the players tasked with returning him to normal. Along the way there are hilariously bad puns, puzzle solving and some truly amazing set pieces.
