A new Dungeons & Dragons comic book series is coming out this October, which marks the first official title to be launched following an exclusive D&D licensing agreement between Dark Horse Comics and Wizards of the Coast.
The four issue mini series is officially entitled Dungeons & Dragons: The Fallbacks and is based on characters that have appeared in the novels of the same name written by award-winning fantasy author Jaleigh Johnson. The comics, however, will be written by popular comic book scribe Greg Pak, with artwork by Wilton Santos. More recently, Dark Horse has released some new images for the upcoming series, including concept art. Below, we grab our bags and boards and take a closer look at all the details.

What is “The Fallbacks” D&D Comic About
Dungeons & Dragons: The Fallbacks is a four issue comic book mini series that follows the further exploits of the adventuring party known as the Fallbacks. The group consists of the the elf Rogue Tess, the human Fighter Anson, the tiefling Bard Lark, the dwarf Cleric Baldric, the human wizard Cazrin, and of course, their eternally hungry pet otyugh Uggie. Notably, the characters first appeared in the 2024 novel The Fallbacks: Bound for Ruin and the 2025 follow-up novel The Fallbacks: Dealing with Dragons, both of which are written by Jaleigh Johnson and set in the Forgotten Realms.
The comic series is being written by Greg Pak (who is best known for scripting the Planet Hulk and World War Hulk series at Marvel), with pencils by Wilton Santos (who is best known for his work on the popular Star Wars: Doctor Aphra series). It also features inks by Edvan Alves, colors by Raul Angulo and lettering by Nate Piekos. The series will also include alternate covers by Marguerite Sauvage, Uzuri, Stephen Segovia, and Dan Panosian. All four issues will also include back cover art by Julie Dillon which connect to create a single image. Below is some recent concept art from Wilston Santos that Dark Horse released to show the new comic book approach to the characters.

The official synopsis reads as follows: In a time of fickle gods and feckless governors, the world yearns for heroes! What it gets are the Fallbacks—a party of daring, dubious, and dysfunctional adventurers who arrive in the city of Loudwater in search of gold and glory. But an encounter with kobold thieves puts the Fallbacks in the crosshairs of a rival team of deeply annoying local heroes. Will the Fallbacks pull off a heist for the ages? Or will they sacrifice it all to put these “heroes” in their place?
Issue #1 of 4 arrives on October 15th, 2025 and will be available at local comic book stores for $4.99 USD.

Final Thoughts
Comic books have been a major part of Dungeons & Dragons since the earliest days of the game, with the license to D&D bouncing from Marvel and DC, to Devil’s Due and IDW. It’ll be interesting to see what Dark Horse can do with the property. It’s also interesting to see more attention being set on The Fallbacks, with the books and characters generally being well received by fans and critics. In fact, they appeared in artwork in the new D&D 2024 core rule books, which suggests Wizards of the Coast has further plans for them.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on these new comics in the days ahead and will provide a full review once they launch.
