Footage & Art from Cancelled D&D Video Game Leaked Online

The past few years have been a golden age for Dungeons & Dragons video games, thanks in large part to the success of Baldur’s Gate 3. In fact, as of this writing there are now almost a dozen D&D games in various stages of development, both in-house at Wizards of the Coast and with third-party creators.
Sadly, not every D&D video game passes its production saving throw. Such was the case with an untitled D&D game from Seattle-based developer Hidden Path, which was code named “Project Dante” and cancelled in late 2024. At that time studio founder Michael Austin posted on LinkedIn that 44 developers had been let go as a result of the game being axed.
And while the work for most cancelled video games never sees the light of day, concept art and gameplay footage from Project Dante has recently been leaked online. So just what was Hidden Path’s defunct D&D video game all about? Below, we take a look at what might have been.
What was Hidden Path’s cancelled D&D video game about?
Hidden Path’s untilted D&D video game was a third-person action RPG that has been in development for over three years. Gameplay footage was recently leaked onto the online video hosting platform Streamable, showing about eight minutes of action. The footage includes the player fighting off enemies and solving a puzzle. There’s. also several lines of dialogue (with full voice acting) for two NPCs companions named Kavir and Ri Om.
Concept art for the game was also leaked on Imgur, which depicts a range of environments, characters and creatures. It’s hard to get a sense of the scope of the game and the story given the limited amount of footage and artwork, but it’s clear that the game was well into the development process and that a lot of work, imagination and resources had been poured into it.
It’s not entirely clear why the the game was cancelled. And in fact, in January 2023 Hidden Path CEO has insisted that the game was still in the works, despite the fact that Wizards of the Coast had axed five other video games in various stages of development and Hidden Path’s Project Dante was allegedly on the chopping block.
What other D&D Video Games Are in the Works?
While Hidden Path’s D&D game unfortunately never made it to a full release, there are currently a number of games in various stages of development:
- Untitled D&D surival sim: In development from Gameloft Montreal, the studio best known for the popular Disney Dreamlight Valley, this new D&D title will be an action-focused survival-life sim set in the Forgotten Realms.
- Project Baxter: In development from Starbreeze Enterainment, who are best known for their shooter Payday 3, little has been revealed about this upcoming D&D game (code named “Project Baxter”) other than that it is a co-operative multiplayer game and slated for release in 2026 for consoles and PC.
- Baldur’s Gate 4: Larian Studios has confirmed that they will not be working on a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3. Hasbro, however, is unlikely to let the lucrative franchise die and chances are good we’ll see a Baldur’s Gate 4 in the future from another developer.
- Untitled Hasbro Game: Wizards of the Coast has also indicated that an in-house studio at Hasbro is currently developing a currently unnamed D&D game, although little information has been revealed about what it will consist of.
- Untitled Saber Interactive game: The developers of the popular Space Marine 2 video game are also working on a new Hasbro title that may be D&D related.
- Untitled Giant Skull Game: The new game studio (which was founded in 2023 by several video game veterans) is working on a single-player action adventure title using the Dungeons & Dragons license.
- Battlemarked: is an upcoming co-op virtual reality RPG game set in the world of D&D. The game is built using the Demeo Action Role Playing System, which involves tactical turn-based combat for up to four players.
- Neverwinter Nights 2 Enhanced Edition: A new version of Obsidian Entertainment’s 2006 hit is being rereleased in July 2025 for the PS5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC.
Final Thoughts
It’s always sad to see what might have been, and Hidden Paths’ unreleased Dungeons & Dragons video game looks like it had a lot going for it and a significant amount of effort put into its creation. Sadly, for now, all we have left are the few tantalizing tidbits leaked online.
