It’s been over 35 years since fantasy author R.A Salvatore first introduced the legendary dark elf ranger Drizzt Do’Urden. Since then, the drow warrior has appeared in over 40 novels, including most recently in the Way of the Drow Trilogy, which concluded in 2023 with the novel Lolth’s Warrior.
Now, the legend of Drizzt continues with a new Dungeons & Dragons novel entitled The Finest Edge of Twilight, which was just released on October 7th, 2025. The book, however, represents a major shift for the series, with the primary character being Briennelle “Breezy” Zaharina, the daughter of Drizzt and Catti-brie, who most recently appeared in the 2024 audiobook Betwixt Two Worlds. The new book is currently available from your local book store, game store or Amazon.
So is this latest take on R.A Salvatore’s Dark Elf saga worth reading? Below, we dig into all the details. (NOTE: In the interest of full transparency we did receive a review copy from Penguin Random House, but have otherwise not been compensated for this review).

What is “The Finest Edge of Twilight” about?
*** MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD***
The Finest Edge of Twilight follows the exploits of Breezy Do’Urden, a young half-drow trying desperately step out of the shadows cast by legendary parents. When the story begins, Breezy is preparing for a major test at the Monastery of the Yellow Rose, where she hopes to demonstrate her martial arts prowess and assume the title of Master of Dragons (a task that requires unseating the current Master, whom she also has developed feelings for). She’s also guided along the way by her “uncle,” the legendary Drow mercenary Jarlaxle. Yet Breezy soon finds her fate intertwined Dahlia Sin’felle, a once-fallen ally now reborn as a vampire spawn, with a third for both blood and power.
While the book is really meant to usher in a new chapter in the series with a complete new character, it’s worth noting that it’s a bit tricky to get your bearings if you haven’t kept up on the series (I had to hit up Wikipedia several times for some lore dumps). I definitely wouldn’t recommend reading it if this your first Drizzt novel. And if you’re a returning fan and expecting more Drizzt, you may be disappointed to learn that his presence in the book is fairly minor.
That being said, where the book really shines in its character development of Breezy. She’s an interesting new hero that’s headstrong, impulsive and charming, and her struggles to find her own identity and way in the world are something almost everyone can relate to. It’s also worth noting that Salvatore hasn’t missed a beat in terms of writing incredible action sequences.

Who is Briennelle Zaharina
Briennelle Zaharina, also known as “Brie” or “Breezy,” is the daughter of the legendary drow ranger Drizzt Do’Urden and the human warrior Catti-brie. She is named after her grandfathers, the dwarf warrior Bruenor Battlehammer and the dark elf swordmaster Zaknafein.
Notably Breezy has not appeared in any previous Legend of Drizzt novels. A teenaged version of the character was supposed to star in her own webcomic, entitled Brie and the Borrowed Blade, which was slated to appear on the Webtoon platform and was being written by popular webcomic author Purpah with artwork by Ryan Maniulit. The series – which is aimed at a younger audience – has been delayed since 2022, with no official release date announced.
In 2024, Breezy appeared for the first time in the Audible Exclusive audiobook Betwixt Two Worlds, which was also written by R.A. Salvatore. The Finest Edge of Twilight, however, is the first official novel to feature her.

Is “The Finest Edge of Twilight” Worth Picking Up?
Pros
- Strong new protagonist: Breezy Do’Urden is a compelling, relatable lead whose determination to step out from her parents’ shadow gives the story real emotional weight.
- Excellent character development: Salvatore captures Breezy’s mix of impulsiveness, courage and self-doubt with nuance, making her growth one of the novel’s biggest strengths.
- Dynamic action scenes: The fight choreography and pacing remain as sharp and cinematic as ever, and are vintage Salvatore at his best.
- Fresh start for the next generation: While connected to Drizzt’s legacy, the focus on Breezy and her journey feels like it gives the series new energy and direction.
Cons
- Weak antagonist: The return of Dahlia Sin’felle feels a bit forced. Including a brand new villain might have been a better way to go.
- Steep learning curve for newcomers: Readers unfamiliar with the Drizzt saga may find it difficult to follow the lore and characters without doing outside research.
- Limited Drizzt presence: Fans expecting a major role for the iconic dark elf may be disappointed by his minimal appearancce in the book.
- Occasional lore overload: The novel sometimes slows down to deliver background exposition that might confuse or bog down new readers.
Final Thoughts
With over 40 Drizzt novels to date, it’s great to see R.A. Salvatore continuing to push the series in directions. And while it isn’t exactly a great jumping on point for new readers (requiring a bit too much knowledge of the series’ massive lore), it does introduce a fascinating new character and combines a solid coming-of-age drama with a lot of heart and action. So while the series might be starting to show its age, there’s still plenty to love for longtime fans of Drizzt, the Forgotten Realms and Dungeons & Dragons.
