What is the Baldur’s Gate 3: The Necromancy of Thay Notebook?

The new notebook is a real-world replica of the cursed grimoire from BG3, while also functioning as a practical notebook for both D&D players and Dungeon Masters alike.

Instead of ancient, forbidden spells, however, the interior features 1/4-inch grids across 272 pages, and is designed for mapping out dungeons, sketching original characters, brainstorming campaign beats or committing your own homebrew arcane knowledge to paper.

It also includes an embossed skull centerpiece set into the cover along with iridescent foil in the eyes and mouth, imitation clasps, a book flap which you can customize and use to mark your place, plus two front interior pages covered in arcane glyphs.

How much is the Necromancy of Thay BG3 notebook?

The hardcover notebook retails for $25.00 USD (not including shipping and handling), which is comparable to other similar products, such as the recently released D&D campaign journals.

When will the Necromancy of Thay BG3 Notebook be released?

The book will officially be released on July 21st, 2026, at which time it should be available at virtually all major online and physical book retailers.

Notably, it is part of a new line of BG3 books coming from Penguin Random House over the remainder of 2026.

What is the Necromancy of Thay in D&D lore?

The Necromancy of Thay is an incredibly powerful and evil sentient spellbook created by the Red Wizards of Thay. Within its pages are a number of arcane spells, rituals and dark secrets related to necromancy and the dead.

Bound in human skin and crafted by unholy means, the book can only be opened by inserting a rare dark amethyst into the mouth of the cover’s face. Individuals who attempt to read the book often go insane, with the foul intelligence trapped within its binding often attempting to take over their minds. If the reader survives, they gain unique necromantic powers and the ability to cast Speak with Dead once per day.

In the real world, the Necromancy of Thay was created specifically for Baldur’s Gate 3. In the game it is located beneath a blighted village, where it is locked away behind a magic mirror and requires a specific dark amethyst gemstone to safely open.

Final Thoughts

If you’re a fan of BG3 or sanity-shattering arcane grimoires, chances are you’ll dig this replica. And while unfortunately it won’t grant you any real-world ability to summon the undead, it will likely come in handy and turn some heads during your next D&D session.

You can order The Necromancy of Thay notebook now from your local game store and on Amazon.
