In a recent interview with video game industry insiders website The Game Business, Wizard of the Coast’s president John Hight essentially confirmed that a Baldur’s Gate 4 will be happening, noting “Baldur’s Gate is an incredible game. And of course, we’re going to do a successor.”
And while he didn’t provide any details on when we might actually see a BG4 and who will be working on it, it’s still welcome news for fans who have been clamoring for a sequel after Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios walked away from the D&D franchise, despite the game raking in an estimated $1.6 billion dollars since it’s release.
So just what does this news mean for a possible Baldur’s Gate 4? Below we break out all the details.

Who is working on Baldur’s Gate 4?
It’s not entirely clear who will be developing BG4. It’s possible that Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast may take the project in-house as they have invested significantly in building out a robust internal video game studio that’s working on an untitled D&D video game (which could possibly be BG4). It’s more likely, however, that it will be outsourced to a third-party developer like Larian Studios.
The clock, however, is ticking as Baldur’s Gate 3 recently celebrated its two-year anniversary, with interest and sales now declining. It should also be noted that shifting a video game franchise to a new developer isn’t uncommon for the industry. In fact, the Baldur’s Gate video game license has moved to a variety of studios over the years, including BioWare, Black Isles Studios, Snowblind and Atari. The big takeaway, however, is that for now at least, we don’t know who will be developing the sequel.

When might Baldur’s Gate 4 be released?
There’s no way to know for certain when Baldur’s Gate 4 will be released. Famously, it took Larian Studios over six years and $100 million dollars to develop and release Baldur’s Gate 3. According to recent analysis, a triple-A video game title can take anywhere from 3-7 years of development time and requires roughly 300 to 500 employees working full time. The time and resources becomes even more extensive for open world games or games with a significant franchise attached. Cyberpunk 2077 and The Last Of Us Part II for example, each took over 7 years to complete with teams that at some points, included over 2,000 employees.
Assuming Wizards of the Coast moved quickly to find a developer and the game had a similar scope and timeline to BG3, that means we likely wouldn’t see Baldur’s Gate 4 until 2030 or later.

Why isn’t Larian Studios making Baldur’s Gate 4?
During a talk at the Game Developers Conference in March 2024, Larian Studios CEO Sven Vincke confirmed that Larian will not be working on any expansions or a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3. Instead, the developer would be handing the Dungeons & Dragons IP back to Wizards of the Coast and moving on to unrelated projects.
“Baldur’s Gate 3 will always have a heart — a warm spot in our hearts. We’ll forever be proud of it, but we’re not going to continue it. We’re not going to make new expansions, which everybody is expecting us to do. We’re not going to make Baldur’s Gate 4, which everybody is expecting us to do. We’re going to move on, we’re going to move away from D&D, and we’re going to start making a new thing,” Vincke said during the interview.
Vincke also provided more context about the decision in a follow-up interview with Gamespot, explaining that the team initially wanted to develop Baldur’s Gate 4, but eventually decided against it. “That’s literally the opposite of what Larian is about. We want to do big, new things. We don’t want to rehash the thing that we’ve done already,” he said.

What other D&D Video Games Are in the Works?
While Baldur’s Gate 4 is likely still many years away, there are a number of games in various stages of development that we will see in the near future:
- Untitled D&D surival sim: In development from Gameloft Montreal, the studio best known for the popular Disney Dreamlight Valley, this new D&D title will be an action-focused survival-life sim set in the Forgotten Realms.
- Project Baxter: In development from Starbreeze Enterainment, who are best known for their shooter Payday 3, little has been revealed about this upcoming D&D game (code named “Project Baxter”) other than that it is a co-operative multiplayer game and slated for release in 2026 for consoles and PC.
- Untitled Hasbro Game: Wizards of the Coast has also indicated that an in-house studio at Hasbro is currently developing a currently unnamed D&D game, although little information has been revealed about what it will consist of. Some have speculated that this may be BG3 (although it seems unlikely).
- Untitled Saber Interactive game: The developers of the popular Space Marine 2 video game are also working on a new Hasbro title that may be D&D related.
- Untitled Giant Skull Game: The new game studio (which was founded in 2023 by several video game veterans) is working on a single-player action adventure title using the Dungeons & Dragons license.
- Battlemarked: is an upcoming co-op virtual reality RPG game set in the world of D&D. The game is built using the Demeo Action Role Playing System, which involves tactical turn-based combat for up to four players.

Final Thoughts
Baldur’s Gate 3 was a massive hit and one of the few economic bright spots for Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast in 2024, earning the company an estimated $90 million in licensing fees, according to a Bloomberg report. With that much money on the table and minimal risk and effort on Wizards of the Coast’s part, the company has every reason to get Baldur’s Gate 4 developed as quickly as possible. It remains to be seen, however, just who will be taking on the daunting task of creating a sequel to one of the greatest Dungeons & Dragons video games of all time.
