Popular third-party accessory creator WizKids has unveiled a new figure in their D&D Nolzur’s Marvelous Miniatures line. The new Adult Amethyst Dragon mini is based on one of dragonkinds’ most unique species and features an impressive amount of detail. The large format figure will be available towards the end of 2025, but you can pre-order one now from WizKids or Amazon.
So just what can we expect with this coming crystalline creation? Below, we chisel out all the details.

What is the new Adult Amethyst Dragon miniature?
The new WizKids mini is about 8 inches in height and features a 15 inch wingspan. It comes in two versions: one fully painted and one unpainted. It also includes what WizKids refers to as “deep cuts,” which is a specific model printing technique that allows for easier painting. The unpainted version retails for $79.99 USD and the painted version is going for $99.99 USD (not including shipping and handling), which is a bit cheaper than similar sized models (which tend to retail for at the $120 USD price range). It will be available sometime between October and December 2025 via online retailers and local game stores.
What is an Amethyst Dragon in D&D lore?
Amethyst dragons are the most powerful of the gem dragons in D&D and are renowned for their wisdom, aloofness and psionic powers. Unlike chromatic dragons (who tend towards evil) or metallic dragons (who tend to be lawful), Amethyst dragons are all about balance, often serving as observers rather than getting directly involved. They make their homes near sources of magical power and their hoards reflect their connection to cosmic mysteries, often containing rare magical crystals, enchanted relics and items of great historical or planar significance. While they tend to prefer diplomacy and observation over direct conflict, when threatened they can unleash devastating amethyst shards or psionic blasts.
In terms of their publication history within D&D, Amethyst dragons first appeared in Dragon Magazine #37 back in 1980 and were later included in Monster Manual II in 1983 for AD&D 1e. They later appeared in AD&D 2e as part of the wider family of gem dragons in several Monstrous Compendium Annuals and the Council of Wyrms setting. In 3rd Edition, they appeared in Monster Manual II in 2002 and in 4th Edition they were reimagined in Draconomicon: Chromatic Dragons and Draconomicon: Metallic Dragons. Their most recent appearance for D&D 5e was for Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons.in 2021, which fully reintroduces gem dragons (including amethysts) with detailed lore, lair actions and stat blocks, including options for wyrmlings, ancient dragons and even greatwyrm variants.
