New adventure is exclusive prequel to the larger Vecna: Eve of Ruin campaign
Wizards of the Coast has recently announced that a new standalone adventure will be coming out soon that ties in directly to the upcoming campaign book Vecna: Eve of Ruin. Entitled Vecna: Nest of the Eldritch Eye, the adventure is coming out on April 16th and will be available exclusively on D&D Beyond, helping to set the stage for the triumphant return of the dreaded arch-lich.
So just what can players expect to find in this exclusive prequel adventure? Below we break out everything we know so far.
What is Vecna: Nest of the Eldritch Eye?
Vecna: Nest of the Eldritch Eye is an optonal one shot adventure that serves as a prequel to the larger Vecna: Eve of Ruin campaign. The adventure is designed for Level 3 to 4 characters and can be run into about 2-3 hours. The plot kicks off in the city of Neverwinter with the players hired by Lord Neverember to help ensure security in the city in the wake of several recent troubling developments. The heroes soon stumble upon the body of a slain adventurer who is holding a mysterious desiccated eye.
The players must then travel into the depths of the city’s catacombs where they are soon matching wits with the Cult of Vecna who are involved in a larger plot to help their undead master alter the very fabric of the multiverse. Notably, playing the prequel is not a requirement for the Vecna: Eve of Ruin campaign. In fact, the campaign is designed for Level 10 characters, which means most groups will likely need to put quite a few additional adventures in between running this one shot and kicking off Eve of Ruin.
These types of prequel adventures are similar to what Wizards of the Coast has done with other products. For example, when Planescape: Adventures in the Multiverse was released back in October of 2023 WotC also released an exclusive tie-in adventure entitled Adventure Atlas: The Mortuary, which included all new material that was not available in the box set.
Nest of the Eldritch Eye, however, is a bit of a different approach from WotC in that it’s only available as a pre-order to Eve of Ruin, and is really meant to expand on those materials in addition to being a standalone adventure.
When is Vecna: Nest of the Eldritch Eye coming out?
Vecna: Nest of the Eldritch Eye will be released on April 16th, 2024 for users who pre-ordered the Eve of Ruin physical and digital bundle (the latter of which will be available on May 7th, 2024).
It will also be available to purchase as a standalone product on D&D Beyond on May 21st, 2024.
How much is Vecna: Nest of the Eldritch Eye?
The adventure will be completely free to users who purchased the Vecna: Eve of Ruin physical and digital bundle. It will, howeverl, likely be available for purchase separately for general D&D Beyond subscribers.
As a standalone product on D&D Beyond it retails for $4.99 USD, which is a similar price point to The Mortuary standalone adventure (notably, The Mortuary was not included for free for users who purchased the Planescape: Adventures in the Multiverse digital and physical bundle, which resulted in some negative fan backlash online.)
Final Thoughts
It’s great to see that Vecna is returning to DnD and it’s great to see that Wizards of the Coast will be releasing Nest of the Eldritch Eye as a way to set the groundwork for the arch-lich’s latest machinations. And while it’s not yet clear what the adventure will consist of, it’s likely going to be a major release as part of the Dungeons & Dragons 50th Anniversary celebration.
We’ll be keeping a close eye (no pun intended) on this product in the days ahead and will update this page with new information as its made available. In the meantime, below is a recent video from the official DnD YouTube channel that offer more details on what to expect in the adventure.
