Sirius Recreates the Legendary D&D Red Box With New Metal Minis

Sirius Dice is paying homage to one of Dungeons & Dragons’ most iconic products. Hot on the heels of last year’s Holmes Boxed Set metal minis, the RPG dice and accessory maker has now unveiled the new D&D: Red Box Basic Set; a four-figure collection of metal miniatures that recreates one of the most famous pieces of D&D cover art: the legendary 1983 “Ancient Red” painting by Larry Elmore.

The set retails for $79.99 USD and will be coming out in November 2026. You can, however, pre-order it now from your local game store, Sirius Dice and Amazon.

What’s included in the Sirius D&D Red Box Basic Set Minis?

The set contains four metal miniatures based on an alternate version of the cover of the 1983 D&D Basic Set: a fighter, a magic-user, a thief and, of course, the red dragon squaring off against them. Each figure is designed to look like an old-school mini and is cast at 32mm scale in a metal alloy finished with a faux antique patina. Sirius notes the figures carry a heft of roughly 60 grams apiece (a deliberate callback to the lead miniatures that were common at hobby shops in the early ’80s – albeit without the associated health hazards).

Sirius describes the line as being built for both “display and play,” meaning you can showcase the set on your shelf as a piece of D&D history or use the figures at the table in an actual game.

How much are the Sirius Red Box D&D Minis?

The Red Box minis set retails for $79.99 USD (not including shipping and handling). That makes it considerably more than the Holmes Boxed Set metal minis, which retailed for $49.95 (although that set only included three figures instead of four). As with that release, however, this is clearly aimed at collectors and old-school D&D fans rather than players looking for a cheap set of table-ready minis.

When will the new Red Box D&D minis be released?

The Red Box set will be available on November 30th, 2026, at which time you’ll be able to find it from local game stores or online from Amazon and the Sirius Dice website.

What Is the D&D Red Box Basic Set?

The Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set (often referred to simply as the “Red Box”) was released by TSR in 1983 as a revision of the earlier Holmes and Moldvay basic sets. Edited by Frank Mentzer, the set included a Players Manual, a Dungeon Masters Rulebook, a set of dice and (in early printings) a crayon for coloring them in.

What made the box legendary, however, was the cover. Illustrated by Larry Elmore, the artwork originally depicted a full party of adventurers facing off against a dragon, similar to earlier D&D box art. But TSR co-founder Gary Gygax reportedly asked Elmore to simplify the scene down to a single fighter squaring off against a red dragon atop a pile of treasure. The resulting image went on to become one of the most recognizable pieces of fantasy art ever produced.

The Basic Set also kicked off the five-box “BECMI” line (Basic, Expert, Companion, Master and Immortals) that Frank Mentzer would go on to write between 1983 and 1986, introducing an entire generation of new D&D players to the game.

With the Holmes set that was released earlier this year and now the new D&D Red Box collection, Sirius is firmly establishing its metal miniatures line as an ongoing tribute to Dungeons & Dragons history. Chances are we’ll also see more classic covers getting the same treatment down the road.
