Roll20 and Discord Launch Free DnD One-Shot Adventure

This past summer, the virtual tabletop Roll20 announced a parternship with the social messaging platform Discord. The result was an app that allowed players to use Roll20 within Discord to run Dungeons & Dragons and a variety of other roleplaying games. It opened up yet another way for both DMs and players to connect, something which is particularly useful following the launch of the 2024 Player’s Handbook and 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide.

Now, the two tech platforms are continuing to let the good times roll virtually with a one-shot adventure for DnD 5e entitled Voyage into Discord, which is available now for free on Discord with the use of a Roll20 account.

So just what can players expect in this new online adventure? Below, we break out all the details.

What is the “Voyage into Discord” one shot?

Voyage into Discord is a DnD 5e one shot that’s designed for 3-6 characters between 1st and 3rd level. The adventure takes place in a new setting known (fittingly enough) as Discord. Created eons ago by a powerful group of mages and located outside the normal planes of existence, Discord was originally created as a series of interconnected worlds where art, culture and sorcery could flourish. Over the eons, however, the realms of Discord have fallen into disrepair, with many of the worlds cut off and forgotten.

At the beginning of the adventure, players find themselves in a long-abandoned hubworld where a recent earthquake has revealed a series of ancient ruins buried deep beneath the earth. It’s up to the players to uncover the true purpose of these mysterious ruins and to stop an ancient evil that has been reawakened.

Notably, the adventure includes a number of magic items, monster stat blocks and six pre-made characters (although you can also create your own). Everything else is fully compatible with Roll20, allowing you to use dynamic lightning and imported DnD 5e content, including the new DnD 2024 core books.

How do you access the “Voyage into Discord” one shot?

In order to access Voyage into Discord, you’ll need both a Discord account and a Roll20 account (although you can use free version of both to get all the content). Notably, you can use either the mobile app or desktop version of Discord.

To find the one shot, you’ll first need to go to any server on Discord (if you’re planning on running the one shot, you should create your own server). Next, click on the App Launcher icon (this is the symbol of four shapes next to the “Message” field at the bottom of your screen next to the reaction, GIFs and upload icons).

Next, do a search for “Roll20” to find the app and then click “Launch.” You’ll then be prompted to login to your Roll20 account (if you aren’t logged in already) and once inside will see Voyage Into Discord among the various offerings. It is, however, only available for a short period of time, so you’ll want to grab the content soon. It’s also worth noting that if you’re a player you should avoid the content as it will contain spoilers and information that only a Dungeon Master running the one shot should see.

Final Thoughts

It’s great to see more content being produced exclusively for Roll20 and Discord, as since the pandemic both have really become key parts of the Dungeons & Dragons ecosystem, and are fantastic tools in their own right. The creation of the new realm of Discord also sounds like a pretty cool new setting, so it’ll be interesting to see if either Roll20 or Discord returns to the world in future content.

In the meantime, you can download Voyage into Discord now via Discord using your Roll20 account.

Cameron Nichols is a Senior Editor who lives in Boston, Massachusetts, and has been playing D&D since the early 90s, when he was introduced by his older brother and cut his teeth on AD&D 2nd Edition. Since then he’s played virtually every RPG he could get his nerdy little mitts on (including a weird Goth phase in the early 2000s when he rocked Vampire: The Masquerade pretty hard). His favorite D&D campaign setting is the Forgotten Realms and his favorite character to play was a Half-Orc Barbarian named Grug (who was unfortunately devoured by a gelatinous cube).
