Roll20 Launches New “Build a Bastion” Contest

The recently released 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide introduced a number of new rules, including the Bastion system, a mechanic which now allows players to build and manage their very own home bases, tapping into new roleplaying possibilities and valuable in-game benefits.

As part of the release (and to help Wizards of the Coast hype up the new DMG), popular virtual tabletop platform Roll20 has announced their first ever Build a Bastion contest, which challenges players to create their own unique facilities using Roll20 and the Dungeon Scrawl app. The winner will receive access to a number of digital products from the VTT. Below, we put together all the details.

What is the Build a Bastion Contest?

Roll20’s Build a Bastion contest challenges players to design a Bastion floor plan using Dungeon Scrawl, the free-to-use RPG map making tool which is now owned by Roll20 and which will soon integrate with the VTT platform.

There are no limits to what your Bastion looks like, with the level and design open entirely to players’ imaginations. That being said, if you are planning on entering the contest, you’ll likely want to familiarize yourself with Bastions to understand which facilities are included and how they work (you can find the complete rules on Bastion’s in the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide).

How do you enter the contest?

There are two ways to submit your map to the Build a Bastion contest:

  • Join the Dungeon Scrawl Discord Sever and post your Bastion in the #mapmaking-challenge channel
  • Submit your entry using the following Roll20 Google Form (NOTE: You will require a Google account for validation purposes and Roll20 may post your image on Discord on your behalf).

While you can only submit one entry, you retain full ownership of your map (although Roll20 will have the right to use it for promotional, advertising and other commercial uses).

Winners will be announced on Discord and Roll20’s Twitter by December 19th, 2024 and will receive an undisclosed Roll20 prize pack.

Final Thoughts

Bastions are a legitimately cool new feature in the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide, so it’s great to see them getting more attention from the wider community. Both Roll20 and Dungeon Scrawl are also fantastic platforms and have done a ton to help elevate and support the TTRPG community, so the contest really is legit and worth checking out. Notably, Roll20 is also launching a new Bastion Tracker that allows you to build and manage your own facilities within the VTT, which is also something you might want to try out if you’re a Roll20 user, even if you aren’t planning on entering the contest.

Cameron Nichols is a Senior Editor who lives in Boston, Massachusetts, and has been playing D&D since the early 90s, when he was introduced by his older brother and cut his teeth on AD&D 2nd Edition. Since then he’s played virtually every RPG he could get his nerdy little mitts on (including a weird Goth phase in the early 2000s when he rocked Vampire: The Masquerade pretty hard). His favorite D&D campaign setting is the Forgotten Realms and his favorite character to play was a Half-Orc Barbarian named Grug (who was unfortunately devoured by a gelatinous cube).
