Is the D&D team secretly releasing a new Ravenloft sourcebook?

This past week, Wizards of the Coast unveiled eight new horror subclasses as part of the latest Unearthed Arcana playtest package. One big question, however, is what upcoming books the subclasses might be featured in?

Wizards of the Coast is surprisingly mum on the subject and there are no obvious options on the current official DnD release schedule. In fact, the next books coming up are the Dragon Delves Anthology in July 2025 and Eberron: Forge of the Artificer in August, 2025 neither of which seems like possible candidates for new horror-themed character options.

This has lead some fans to speculate that the new subclasses will in fact be featured in an upcoming Ravenloft DnD sourcebook. It’s not just wishful thinking, however, as there are some strong indicators that this could actually be happening. Below, we piece together all the grizzly details.

Why could a new Ravenloft sourcebook for DnD be in the works?

There are a few good reasons why a new Ravenloft sourcebook is a possibility, including:

  • Mystery book slated for October: During a January 2025 press conference, Wizards of the Coast announced that a “mystery” book would be released in October 2025, which of course, coincides with Halloween and is the perfect time for a new Ravenloft book.
  • Ravenloft is D&D horror: The May 2025 Unearthed Arcana is officially known as the “Horror Subclasses” playtest. When it comes to Dungeons & Dragons Ravenloft is synonymous with horror, so it makes sense that these new character options would be included in Ravenloft supplement.
  • Curse of Strahd anniversary: March 2026 will mark the 10th anniversary of the popular Curse of Strahd campaign (which also happens to be one of our picks for the best DnD campaigns ever). This opens up some potential cross promotion with a new Ravenloft sourcebook release.
  • Ravenloft is as popular as ever: While the last official DnD Ravenloft supplement was in 2021 with Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft the setting remains incredibly popular. Case in point, in May 2025 the new novel Ravenloft: Heir of Strahd was released and written by popular fantasy author Delilah S. Dawson.

When will we know more about a possible Ravenloft sourcebook?

Wizards of the Coast has yet to confirm our suspicions about a new Ravenloft book for Dungeons & Dragons, but the timing makes sense. The final date for feedback on the latest Unearthed Arcana horror subclasses is May 13th, 2025. That gives Wizards of the Coast about five months to polish the materials and get it into a final print and digital format. The fact that the material is even at the playtest stage, also suggests that it’s fairly far along and WotC isn’t likely to invest developer resources in horror-themed classes that aren’t ever release

All that to say, is a Ravenloft sourcebook is happening, we’ll likely learn about it soon as WotC typically promotes new books several months in advance.

Final Thoughts

The possibility of a new Ravenloft DnD sourcebook is an exciting one – even if it’s not exactly a done deal. Of course, anything can happen in the days ahead and there’s no guarantee that it will ever make it through the Mists and into the light of day. Still, if there’s one thing Ravenloft has proven over the years, it’s that it never really stays dead for very long.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on this story in the days ahead and will update this page with new information as it’s made available.
