Wizards of the Coast serves up a fresh batch of Dungeons & Dragons inspired recipes
Food is an often overlooked part of the D&D experience, which is a shame given its potential as part of the larger game world. In 2020, Wizards of the Coast tried to rectify that situation by releasing the Heroes’ Feast D&D cookbook, a collection of recipes that blend real world ingredients with elements of the game itself.
Now, Wizards of the Coast has released a sequel entitled Heroes’ Feast Flavors of the Multiverse. Published by Penguin Random House, this new D&D cookbook offers up dozens of recipes inspired by the Forgotten Realms, Eberron, Planescape and other popular settings scattered across the multiverse.
Don’t expect any beholder brisket or goblin gumbo though. As with the first Heroes’ Feast, all of the recipes are developed by professional real-world chefs and are composed of ingredients you can find from most local grocery stores (although there are a few ingredients like venison and crickets which you might have to hunt around for).
The book (which came out November 2023) and is written by Kyle Newman, Jon Peterson, Michael Witwer, and Sam Witwer, all of whom contributed to the original Heroes Feast D&D cookbook. It’s also available now for order from Amazon.
What’s In the new D&D Cookbook?
Heroes’ Feast Flavors of the Multiverse features 76 unique recipes that cover a wide range of dishes and D&D locations, including:
- Bacon-Wrapped Smoked Mussels (from the city of Sigil of Planescape)
- Chopforest Salad (from Waterdeep’s Yawning Portal Inn)
- Steak of the Deep (from Spelljammer’s Rock of Bral)
- Kendermore Cobbler (from the world of Dragonlance)
- Vada’s Vanilla Buns (from the Radiant Citadel)
The book also include a range of appetizers and main courses, along with drinks and desserts. Notably, a few of the recipes from Flavors of the Multiverse will also be featured in the upcoming Heroes’ Feast Cooking Show, which will be appearing on eOne’s new D&D TV channel.
My girlfriend and I tried cooking about a dozen of the recipes since the book was released, and they all turned out surprisingly well (despite the fact that neither of us are gourmet cooks by any stretch of the imagination).
In fact, one of the great things about them is that they actually really are delicious and surprisingly easy to make. There’s nothing too bizarre and most of the ingredients are readily available. We actually made one of the dishes (the Vada’s Vanilla Buns) for our D&D group and everyone polished them off quickly (without having to roll any saving throws against food poisoning).
Final Review Score
If you’re a fan of cooking and D&D, chances are you’re going to love Heroes’ Feast Flavors of the Multiverse. It’s both a loving homage to some of the games most loved worlds and characters, but also surprisingly accessible for cooks of all skill levels. Not every recipe seems like a total hit, but there are enough options in the book to satisfy pretty much pallet.
The end result is a feast for gamers everywhere.
Review Score: 19 out of 20
