Beloved Dungeons & Dragons cartoon gets a new line of high-end figures
If you’re a DnD fan looking for a heaping dose of Saturday morning nostalgia, then look no further than the latest action figure release from San Francisco-based toy manufacturer Super 7.
Based on the popular 1980s cartoon series, this first wave of high-end figures (dubbed Dungeons & Dragons Ultimate) features a familiar mix of heroes and villains that will be instantly recognizable to anyone who grew up with the show. The figures are available now for pre-order now.
So are these new toys worth dropping your hard earned gold pieces on? Below we break out all the details.
What is the Dungeons & Dragons Ultimate Line?
While the DnD animated series only ran on CBS for three seasons between 1983 and 1985, it’s since gone on to become a cult hit, with the characters continuing to remain popular and make appearances even decades later. They’ve been featured in a recent comic book series from IDW, starred in an epic car commercial and even made a cameo in the live action Honor Among Thieves film. Wizards of the Coast has also recently indicated that the evil wizard Venger – the antagonist of the original cartoon – will appear in a future DnD 5e supplement.
This also isn’t the first time the animated characters have been transformed into action figures. In early 2023, Hasbro released a variety of toys inspired by the TV series as part of their D&D Cartoon Classics line.
The four action figures included in Super 7’s new “Wave 1” Dungeons and Dragons collection, however, will include the Thief Sheila, the Ranger Hank, the Skeleton Warrior Dekkion and a two-pack featuring the dreaded Shadow Demons.
Unlike the Hasbro line of figures, however, Super 7’s are of a much higher quality, featuring more detail and better materials, along interchangeable hands and faces, as well as additional accessories and weapons.
How much are the new Super 7 DnD action figures?
Each of the new Dungeons & Dragons Ultimate figures retails for $55 USD (which again speaks to the quality of the figures in comparison to your typical action figure). Like other Super 7 figures, these are meant more as high-end collectibles than something that’s meant to be played with.
You can also purchase all four products as a “Super Pack” which retails for $220 USD. This includes all the figures, plus extra glow-in-the-dark weapons and a metal circle of power for Dekkion.
When will the new DnD action figures available?
The pre-orders for these character figures last until February 11, 2024, and they’re expected to ship to buyers sometime in October 2024. Notably at the moment you can only order them from the Super 7 website, but it’s possible that local game shops and specialty toy stores may also have them available sometime next year.
It’s also worth noting that they are a limited run, so once they’re gone, chances are they won’t be reproduced again and will likely only be available on the seondary market for much higher prices.
Final Thoughts
It’s great to see the Saturday morning legacy of the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon live on in this latest incarnation from Super 7. As this is just the first wave of actions, it’s likely we can expect other characters to come out in the months ahead. In the meantime you can pre-order now Super 7.
In the meantime, we’ll be keeping a close eye out for any new Super 7 DnD action figures as they’re made available.
