The New Changeling (DnD 2025 Species Guide)

Capable of altering their appearance and identities in the blink of an eye, the Changeling has always stood apart from more traditional Dungeons & Dragons species. First introduced in 2019 as a fully playable race in Eberron: Rising from the Last War, they were later updated in 2022 for Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse. Since then, Changelings have quickly morphed into a fan-favorite among the DnD community, offering both unique gameplay mechanics and narrative potential.

Now, a new version of the Changeling has reformed in the pages of Eberron: Forge of the Artificer, with some significant alterations that align with the new DnD 2024 ruleset, while also introducing one major revision to how their shapeshifting ability functions.

So are these changes to the Changeling more than just a superficial face lift? Below, we go skin deep into all the details.

What Are Changelings in DnD 2025?

With ever-changing appearances, Changelings reside in many societies undetected. Each Changeling can supernaturally adopt any face they like. For some changelings, a new face may reveal an aspect of their soul.

The first Changelings in the multiverse appeared in the Feywild, and the wondrous, mutable essence of that plane lingers in changelings today-even in those who have never set foot in the fey realm.

In their true form, Changelings appear faded, their features almost devoid of detail. It is rare to see one in that form, for a typical changeling alters their shape the way others might change clothes. However, many Changelings develop identities with more depth, crafting a persona complete with history and beliefs to go with each shape. A Changeling adventurer might have personas for many situations, including negotiation, investigation and combat.

Multiple Changelings can share a persona. Personas can even pass down through a family, allowing a younger Changeling to take advantage of contacts established by the persona’s previous users.

What Are the New Changeling Species Traits in DnD 2025?

Below is the full list of all the Changeling traits using the new 2025 rules from Eberron: Forge of the Artificer (2025).

  • Creature Type: Fey
  • Size: Medium (4–7 feet) or Small (2–4 feet), chosen when selecting this species
  • Speed: 30 feet

As a Changeling, you have the following special traits:

  • Changeling Instincts: Thanks to your fey heritage, you gain proficiency in two of the following skills: Deception, Insight, Intimidation, Performance, or Persuasion.
  • Shape-Shifter: As an action, you can magically change your appearance and voice. You decide the specifics of the transformation, including coloration, hair length, sex, and general features. You may also adjust your height and weight and can shift between Medium and Small size. You can appear as a member of another playable species, though none of your statistics change. You must adopt a form with a similar limb arrangement, and you cannot mimic an individual you have not seen. Your clothing and gear do not change with this transformation. While shape-shifted using this trait, you have Advantage on all Charisma checks. You remain in your chosen form until you take an action to revert to your true appearance.

Is the New Changeling Worth Playing?

For a species that never stays the same, the new 2025 Changeling is almost identical to its previous 2022 version. The only major differences are how the new DnD rules handles species, and the fact that Changeling now get Advantage on all Charisma checks when shapechanged, the latter of which is significant, but not exactly a major overhaul.

That being said, if you enjoy playing quirky characters and navigating complex social encounters, the Changeling is still a species that can quite literally be whatever you want it to.

You can try the new Changeling for yourself in the pages of Eberron: Forge of the Artificer, which is available now from your local game store, D&D Beyond and Amazon.

Cameron Nichols is a Senior Editor who lives in Boston, Massechustes, and has been playing D&D since the early 90s, when he was introduced by his older brother and cut his teeth on AD&D 2nd Edition. Since then he’s played virtually every RPG he could get his nerdy little mitts on (including a weird Goth phase in the early 2000s when he rocked Vampire: The Masquerade pretty hard). His favorite D&D campaign setting is the Forgotten Realms and his favorite character to play was a Half-Orc Barbarian named Grug (who was unfortunately devoured by a gelatinous cube).
