The New 2024 Oath of Glory Paladin (DnD 5e Subclass Deep Dive)

First appearing in Mythic Odyssey of Theros and later reprinted in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, the Oath of Glory subclass is a relatively new addition to the DnD 5e Paladin. Driven to perform legendary deeds, these holy heroes strive to conquer the impossible and bring glory to their gods.

Now, the Oath of Glory Paladin is about to face their greatest challenge yet: a major rules update in the pages of the 2024 Player’s Handbook. This includes some surprising new updates, including enhancements to Peerless Athlete and the Aura of Alacrity, as well as a brand new subclass spell.

So will the Oath of Glory Paladin emerge triumphant from these changes? Below, we charge into all the details.

What’s changed in the new 2024 Oath of Glory Paladin?

Below are all the changes to the 2024 Oath of Glory Paladin in DnD 5e. For ease of reference we’ve included the level and whether the feature has changed from 2014. It’s important to note that both the old and the new version of the subclass still fall under the DnD 5e core rules.

What are the Oath of Glory Paladin features for 2024 DnD 5e?

Below are the full list of all the features using the new 2024 core rules. Where applicable we have called out details to the changes that have been made from the 2014 Oath of Devotion Paladin.

For the 2024 Oath of Glory, the key tenets that guide character’s remain the same:

  • Actions over Words. Strive to be known by glorious deeds, not words.
  • Challenges Are but Tests. Face hardships with courage, and encourage your allies to face them with you.
  • Hone the Body. Like raw stone, your body must be worked so its potential can be realized.
  • Discipline the Soul. You must marshal the discipline to overcome failings within yourself that threaten to dim the glory of you and your friends.

In the new 2024 rules, your Oath of Glory Paladin gains spells from the list below (with additional spells added as you advance in level). Once you gain access to an oath spell, you always have it prepared and it doesn’t count against the number of spells you can prepare each day.

Notably all of the 2014 spells remain in place, but in 2024 players also get a brand new spell: Yolande’s Regal Presence. This 5th level spell is created by the famed elf queen Yolande from the Greyhawk setting and essentially forces enemies to fall to their knees and take psychic damage at the site of your presence.

In the 2024 rules, you gain the following two Channel Divinity options:

Peerless Athlete. As a bonus action, you can use your Channel Divinity to augment your athleticism. For the next 1 hour, you have advantage on Strength (Athletics) and Dexterity (Acrobatics) checks; you can carry, push, drag, and lift twice as much weight as normal; and the distance of your long and high jumps increases by 10 feet (this extra distance costs movement as normal). Notably in the 2014 rules this feature originally only lasted for 10 minutes.

Inspiring Smite. Immediately after you deal damage to a creature with your Divine Smite feature, you can use your Channel Divinity as a bonus action and distribute temporary hit points to creatures of your choice within 30 feet of you, which can include you. The total number of temporary hit points equals 2d8 + your level in this class, divided among the chosen creatures however you like.

You emanate an aura that fills you and your companions with supernatural speed, allowing you to race across a battlefield in formation. Your walking speed increases by 10 feet. In addition, if you aren’t incapacitated, the walking speed of any ally who start or end their turn within your aura increases by 10 feet until the end of that turn. (This is a change from the 2014 rules, where players could only get this benefit if they started their turn within 5 feet of you).

The 2024 version of this feature is identical to how it was presented in 2014. When you or another creature you can see within 10 feet of you is hit by an attack roll, you can use your reaction to grant a bonus to the target’s AC against that attack, potentially causing it to miss. The bonus equals your Charisma modifier (minimum of +1). If the attack misses, you can make one weapon attack against the attacker as part of this reaction, provided the attacker is within your weapon’s range. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of once), and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

As a bonus action, you gain the following benefits for 1 minute:

  • You are blessed with an otherworldly presence, gaining advantage on all Charisma checks.
  • Once on each of your turns when you make a weapon attack and miss, you can cause that attack to hit instead.
  • If you fail a saving throw, you can use your reaction to reroll it. You must use this new roll.

Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest, unless you expend a 5th-level spell slot to use it again.

Is the New 2024 Oath of Glory Paladin worth playing?

The new 2024 Paladin saw a massive overhaul, with a nerf to Divine Smite and a number of other significant changes. The 2024 Oath of Glory Paladin, however, has seen only a few minor adjustments that seem more like quality-of-life improvements rather than any deep cut. In fact, the duration increase to Peerless Athlete is a fantastic improvement that offers some real potential in exploration as well as combat. Similarly, Aura of Alacrity also offers much more utility and some genuine tactical potential. Finally, it’s great to see a completely new spell introduced for the subclass.

You can find the complete rules for the new Oath of Glory Paladin in the 2024 Player’s Handbook, which is available for pre-order now on D&D Beyond and Amazon.

Below is also a video from the official Dungeons & Dragons YouTube channel, with DnD lead designer Jeremy Crawford offering details on the changes to the subclass.

Since then he’s played virtually every RPG he could get his nerdy little mitts on (including a weird Goth phase in the early 2000s when he rocked Vampire: The Masquerade pretty hard). His favorite D&D campaign setting is the Forgotten Realms and his favorite character to play was a Half-Orc Barbarian named Grug (who was unfortunately devoured by a gelatinous cube).
