What is Dungeons of Drakkenheim?

Dungeons of Drakkenheim is a campaign created by popular YouTuberes “The Dungeon Dudes” based on an actual play series they ran on their channel back in 2019. The material was later adapted into a full-fledged campaign book after a successful Kickstarter and was released by third-party DnD 5e publisher Ghostfire Games.

The campaign world is focused largely on the city of Drakkenheim, a one thriving metropolis that was devastated 15 years earlier by an otherworldly meteor storm. It’s now an urban wasteland filled with foul sorcery, mutated monsters and various factions vying for control of the ruins. Thematically, it’s a unique blend of cosmic horror and dark fantasy, with the original campaign featuring non-linear story progression and sandbox style play, earning it a spot on our list as one of the best DnD campaigns of all time.

Cameron Nichols is a Senior Editor who lives in Boston, Massachusetts, and has been playing D&D since the early 90s, when he was introduced by his older brother and cut his teeth on AD&D 2nd Edition. Since then he’s played virtually every RPG he could get his nerdy little mitts on (including a weird Goth phase in the early 2000s when he rocked Vampire: The Masquerade pretty hard). His favorite D&D campaign setting is the Forgotten Realms and his favorite character to play was a Half-Orc Barbarian named Grug (who was unfortunately devoured by a gelatinous cube).
