During a panel at this year’s annual Gary Con in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, Wizards of the Coast announced a brand new official Dungeons & Dragons sourcebook. Entitled Melf’s Guide to Greyhawk: Borderlands of Iuz, the upcoming supplement is being written by Luke Gygax, son of late D&D co-creator Gary Gygax. Notably, as a child, Luke Gygax originally played the character of Melf in his father’s early D&D games, with the elven wizard going on to inspire several now iconic spells that have appeared in every edition of the game.
The news is somewhat surprising given that the Gygax family has had a relatively rocky relationship with Wizards of the Coast over the past few years, but speaks to the WotC’s attempt to both mend fences with both the Gygax estate and the larger fan community.
So just can players expect when Melf makes his triumphant return to D&D? Below, we break out everything we know so far.

What is “Melf’s Guide to Greyhawk: Borderlands of Iuz” about?
Currently, details are fairly sparse on what the book will be about. We do know that the book is meant to further expand Greyhawk as part of D&D 5.5e edition following the setting’s return in the pages of the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide. We also know that the book will include new maps from original Greyhawk cartographer Anna B. Meyer and additional design work from Jay Scott, a longtime contributor to the Greyhawk fan community. It also features cover art from legendary illustrator Jeff Easley (with the original painting being sold at Gary Con to actor Vince Vaughan to raise funds for charity, with Vaughan later gifting it back to Luke Gygax).
During the press conference at Gary Con 2026, Luke Gygax also noted that the book was originally conceived as a third-party release (likely published on DMsGuild), but after speaking with Wizards of the Coast VP Dan Ayoub last year it was decided to release it as an official D&D product.

At one point, Luke Gygax did say that product was going to be called Melf’s Guide to Greyhawk: The Shield Lands, but in a recent post on ENWorld, designer Jay Scott confirmed that it would in fact be called Borderlands of Iuz. Scott also confirmed that the project features additional writers, including Stephen Radney-Macfarlan and Les Reno, and will not have any direct involvement from Wizards of the Coast beyond publishing the book.
Notably, in the lore of Greyhawk the Shield Lands is a confederacy of noble states that serves as a vital defensive “shield” for the south against the evil forces of Iuz and the Horned Society. Ruled by the Knights of the Holy Shielding, the nation is defined by its rigid adherence to honor and its devotion to martial deities like Heironeous. Following their devastating defeat and occupation during the Greyhawk Wars, the region remains a scarred, war-torn frontier where survivors lead a grim struggle to reclaim their ancestral lands.

When is “Melf’s Guide to Greyhawk: Borderlands of Iuz” coming out?
Wizards of the Coast has not yet confirmed when the book will be released. Notably, 2026 has seen the start of new D&D Seasons, with April to June marking the Season of Horror, July to September being the Season of Magic and October to December marking the Season of Champions. It’s not clear if the book will fit into any of these Seasons or will see a later release in 2027.
It’s also not yet clear if the book will be a physical release or will be a D&D Beyond exclusive, which has been the case with other titles in recent months.

Who is Luke Gygax?
Luke Gygax is the son of Dungeons & Dragons co-creator Gary Gygax and is perhaps best known as one of the few people to playtest D&D in the original Greyhawk campaign. Notably, the younger Gygax spent over 30 years in the US Army, but during this time also remained actively involved in the D&D fan community, including founding Gary Con in 2009 in honor of his father.
The younger Gygax also created the TTRPG publishing company Gaxx Worx in 2018, which has published a number of OSR adventures since then. More recently, in 2025 Gygax and Troll Lord Games launched a successful BackerKit entitled Castle Zagyg, a mega dungeon based on a project Gary Gygax had been working on prior to his death in 2008.

Who is Melf in D&D Lore?
Melf, also known as Prince Brightflame, is an elven arch-mage of incredible power from the world of Oerth who is best known for two iconic spells which bear his name Melf’s Acid Arrow and Melf’s Minute Meteors. In the lore of Greyhawk, he is an ally to the legendary wizard Mordenkainen and a former member of the Citadel of Eight. He is also the cousin of Queen Yolande, ruler of the elven realm of Celene and commander of the Knights of Luna. Throughout his adventuring career he is often depicted as battling the forces of Iuz and the Scarlet Brotherhood.
In the real world, Melf is one of the first player characters in the history of Dungeons & Dragons and was created by Luke Gygax in his father’s early home mages. His name is literally an amalgam of “Male Elf.” He has been mentioned in numerous D&D supplements and novels over the years (as well as getting his own action figure in 1983), and most recently appeared as a playable character in the D&D mobile game Idle Champions.

Final Thoughts
The announcement of Melf’s Guide to Greyhawk feels like a full circle moment for Dungeons & Dragons, and returning to the roots of the game in terms of both the Gygax family and the world of Greyhawk feels like a smart move on the part of the company. Whether or not the upcoming sourcebook will live up to its legacy, however, remains to be seen.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on this story in the days ahead and will update this page with new information as it’s made available.
