The past few years have seen a resurgence in D&D board games, with everything from head-to-head skirmish games like WizKids’ Onslaught to city building strategy titles like Builders of Baldur’s Gate and the upcoming mapping game Edge of the Realms. Most of these games have been well received by both Dungeons & Dragons fans and board game aficionados alike, paving the way for newer releases.
Now, award-winning puzzle and board game maker Ravensburger has just released a D&D version of their popular Horrified series. The co-operative game involves players rescuing NPCs, collecting treasure, solving puzzles and facing down iconic D&D monsters. You can pick up a copy now from your local game store or on Amazon.
Sois Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons worth rolling into? Below, we scare up all the details. (In the interest of full transparency, we have received a review copy from Ravensburger, but have otherwise not been compensated for this review).

What is the “Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons” board game?
Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons is a co-operative board game designed for one to five players and is based on the popular Horrified: Universal Monsters game, which has since released several other versions, including Horrified: World of Monsters, Horrified: Greek Monsters and Horrified: American Monsters.
The D&D version is set in Undermountain, the sprawling, monster-filled mega dungeon located beneath the streets of the city of Waterdeep in the Forgotten Realms. This new environment is captured in an impressive double-sided board map that features some unique artwork of a mimic on the back side. In fact, all of the art in the game is top notch, with high production value and solid design.

In terms of gameplay, your goal is to work with other players slay four different monsters: the Beholder, the Mimic, the Displacer Beast and the Red Dragon. The number of monsters can be increased or decreased to change the difficulty, and you can mix and match for some interesting combinations. To defeat a monster in battle, however, you’ll first have to solve a puzzle associated with them (with the Red Dragon having two specific puzzles for an added challenge). Each monster, also has their own unique powers which can hinder or harm players.
Players themselves take on the role of one of five different iconic D&D classes: The Rogue, The Wizard, The Fighter, The Cleric and The Bard. On your turn you can take four actions from the following options: move, collect an item, direct NPCs to safety, solve a monster’s puzzle, battle a monster or use a class ability. This latter action involves rolling the D20 that comes with the game (another first for the Horrified series). The only downside to this is that it activating your ability often comes down to sheer luck, which can hamper strategy. Also, there’s really no reason to ever not use your special class ability, which again, feels a little limiting.

The tension and fun of the game, however, comes from attempting to outmaneuver monsters and working collaboratively with other players by mixing and matching various actions and abilities. There’s also an element of unpredictability in that after each player turn you draw from a random monster deck, and monsters themselves also have their own abilities which are determined using the game’s D20.
In many ways, Horrified is quite similar to the popular board game Pandemic, in that players can go in any order they wish, have a wide range of actions to choose from and are essentially racing the clock to complete key objectives. That being said, the reality is that you’re still only drawing from a set number of actions and if you’re looking for something a little more crunchy or tactical, this probably isn’t going to scratch that itch. For younger players (the game is designed for ages 10 and up) or casual players, however, it’s a fast and fun experience that also really captures the aesthetic and vibes of D&D.

Final Thoughts
Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons is a solid co-op board game that really does a great job of capturing the feel of playing D&D. While it’s lean style of gameplay might not appeal to hardcore board game geeks or crunchy TTRPG fans, it’s still incredibly fast and fun, with a ton of replay value and beautiful game components.
