Hidden Path D&D Video Game Makes Death Saving Throw

Game developer says reports about the cancellation of their upcoming Dungeons & Dragons video game are not true

Earlier this week Bloomberg news reported that Wizards of the Coast was axing five Dungeons & Dragons video games that were in various stages of development. On the alleged chopping block was a D&D game from OtherSide Entertainment, a studio founded by legendary designer Paul Neurath (who has worked on titles such as Thief and Ultima Underworld).

Hidden Path, however, recently took to Twitter, claiming that despite reports the game is not in fact cancelled, and is still in the development stage, writing: “Hey everyone, just wanted to set the record straight: Our epic D&D project with Wizards is still happening! In fact, we’re currently hiring and looking for talented people to join our team.”

In response to Hidden Path’s tweet, Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier (who originally broke the story) defended his sources, writing on Twitter: “This is a very unusual and very unfortunate situation, but we stand by our reporting. Both a source and a Wizards of the Coast spokesperson told Bloomberg on Tuesday that Hidden Path’s D&D game is cancelled.”

It remains to be seen if Schreier knows something Hidden Path doesn’t, or if this is a case of miscommunication. In any case, while details on Hidden Path’s D&D game are still under wraps, according a tweet from March 2021 the game is expected to be a “AAA, third-person, open-world fantasy RPG that will be taking place inside the Dungeons & Dragons franchise.”

What other D&D video games are coming out?

Wizards of the Coast’s track record with recent D&D video games hasn’t exactly been a critical hit. Their last outing was the 2021 hack-and-slash brawler Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance which was developed by the Montreal-based Invoke Studios and featured the popular dark elf ranger Drizzt Do’urden. The game, however, had relatively modest sales and earned mixed reviews from both fans and critics.

Fans however, are more hopeful for the upcoming D&D video game Baldur’s Gate 3, which is slated for release in August 2023 for PC and Mac and is being developed by Larian Studios.

Wizards of the Coast is also working on a new DnD virtual tabletop (VTT) platform that is being created using the Unreal video game engine. The platform will be part of their ongoing One D&D playtest and is designed to replace the need for miniatures, character tokens and playable battlemats.

In the meantime, it remains to be seen whether Hidden Path’s new D&D game has indeed survived the turmoil inside Wizards of the Coast. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this story as it develops.

Cameron Nichols is a Senior Editor who lives in Boston, Massechustes, and has been playing D&D since the early 90s, when he was introduced by his older brother and cut his teeth on AD&D 2nd Edition. Since then he’s played virtually every RPG he could get his nerdy little mitts on (including a weird Goth phase in the early 2000s when he rocked Vampire: The Masquerade pretty hard). His favorite D&D campaign setting is the Forgotten Realms and his favorite character to play was a Half-Orc Barbarian named Grug (who was unfortunately devoured by a gelatinous cube).
