Wizards of the Coast has just released the first official Unearthed Arcana playtest of 2026. Listed as the Mystic Subclasses playtest, the package introduces four brand new subclasses that have never before appeared in existing D&D 5e materials and which tap into a variety of new magical sub-systems.
Wizards of the Coast has not confirmed what upcoming sourcebook (if any) these new subclasses will be appearing in, but given other recent Unearthed Arcana playtests (including the October 2025 Subclasses Update) it’s possible they may be part of a new Xanathar’s Guide to Everything type book for the updated D&D 2024 rules.
So just what do these new Mystic subclasses consist of? Below, we break down all the details.

What’s included in the new Subclasses Update playtest?
The four new Mystic subclasses include the Warrior of the Mystic Arts Monk, Oath of the Spellguard Paladin, Magic Stealer Rogue and Vestige Patron Warlock.
- Warrior of the Mystic Arts (Monk): This subclass offers a true spellcasting version of the Monk, blending Sorcerer magic with traditional martial combat in a way that feels closer to a gish than any prior Monk subclass. The subclass uses full spell slots and prepared spells, drawing from the Sorcerer spell list and keying off Wisdom. Its Mystic Focus feature allows spell slots and Focus Points to be converted back and forth, giving the Monk an unusual level of resource flexibility. Later features like Mystic Fighting Style also let the Monk weave cantrips and low-level spells directly into attacks.
- Oath of the Spellguard (Paladin): The Oath of the Spellguard is a defensive, anti-mage Paladin built around protecting allies from hostile magic rather than smiting foes directly. Its Guardian Bond feature establishes a literal bodyguard role, allowing the Paladin to buff an ally’s Armor Class, while Spellguard Strike lets the Paladin punish spellcasting enemies mid-cast. The subclass also leans heavily into counter-magic at higher levels, granting Advantage on Concentration checks through Aura of Concentration and pairing melee attacks with Counterspell via the Spell-Breaking Blade ability. At level 20, Eternal Spellguard transforms the Paladin into a walking anti-magic bulwark, granting widespread spell resistance, imposing Disadvantage on spell attacks, and generally enhancing a bonded ally’s ability to survive magical attacks.

- Magic Stealer (Rogue): The Magic Stealer Rogue is designed to specifically counter spellcasters, turning enemy magic into fuel for Sneak Attack damage and battlefield disruption. Its core feature, Empower Sneak Attack, lets the Rogue siphon magical energy from nearby spellcasters and convert it into bonus Force damage, scaling directly with the spell’s level. Drain Magic also adds a rare spell-slot recovery option, while later Cunning Strike options introduce effects like spell disruption, resistance theft and spell vulnerability. High-level features such as Occult Shroud and Eldritch Implosion also allow Magic Stealer to essentially take down spells entirely while stunning foes who rely too heavily on magic.
- Vestige Patron (Warlock): The Vestige Patron introduces a companion-focused Warlock whose power is derived from a forgotten, dying god desperate to reclaim relevance. At the heart of the subclass is the Vestige Companion, a customizable Celestial, Fiend or Undead entity that acts as both familiar and combat asset, scaling directly with the Warlock’s level. The subclass also blends summoning support, granting domain-based spell access and powerful aura effects at higher levels. Features like Aura of Power and Semblance of Life push the Vestige into almost Cleric-like abilities that can shield allies, prevent death and temporarily assume the form of a powerful summoned creature.

Final Thoughts
It’s great to see Wizards of the Coast rolling out some genuinely new classes for the D&D 2024 rules , rather than simply rehashing old ones. And while the company has not yet announced any upcoming DnD book for 2026, given the content that we’re seeing here, it’s likely we’ll be getting some news soon.
In the meantime, you can check out the four new Mystic subclasses via the Unearthed Arcana page or download the PDF directly. Player feedback opens on January 22nd, 2026.
