Has Star Wars appeared in Dungeons & Dragons before?

Officially, no official Dungeons & Dragons books for Star Wars have ever been published. The two franchises, however, have intersected over the years in both official tabletop RPG adaptations and several fan-lead projects.

The closest we’ve come to seeing an actual D&D Star Wars game was several decades ago. In the year 2000, Wizards of the Coast published the Star Wars Roleplaying Game, which utilized the D&D 3rd edition d20 system framework. The game was well received, eventually getting an update in 2007 known as the Star Wars Saga Edition. The latter, featured a design team that included Chris Perkins (who would famously go on to develop D&D 5E).

At the time, the Star Wars Saga Edition was partially influenced by the D&D 4th Edition game which was being developed by Wizards of the Coast (a recent July 2026 interview on historian Ben Rigg’s podcast “Reading D&D Aloud” details more about how the two games intersected).

The official Star Wars license left Wizards of the Coast in 2010 and was picked up by Fantasy Flight Games, but it’s close relation to D&D continues. In fact, an unofficial fan-made product entitled SW5e (aka Star Wars 5E) was released in 2018 by a developer Galiphile (aka Stephen Kiel). The game took the D&D 5e ruleset and released a complete library of digital rulebooks, including a Player’s Handbook for classes and Force powers, Scum and Villainy for equipment and gear, Wretched Hives for adversaries and creatures, and Starships of the Galaxy for vehicle and starship combat rules.

It became a massive hit among the 5E homebrew community, with a number of products and resources developed by a dedicated team of fans. In 2020, Galiphile shut down the SW5E site citing burnout and his growing workload to maintain the game. It was, however, quickly picked up by a new team of volunteers calling themselves Delta Squad, who continues to run the site and maintain the SW5E game to this day.

What other Star Wars RPGs have been published over the years?

Over the decades, several. different publishers have obtained the official license to bring a galaxy far, far away to the tabletop.

  • West End Games’ d6 System (1987–1999): Widely regarded as the gold standard for space opera roleplaying, WEG’s Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game utilized a fast-paced d6 dice pool mechanic. Beyond its gameplay, it also fundamentally shaped the Star Wars universe as Lucasfilm heavily relied on WEG’s sourcebooks to establish canon during the creation of the modern Expanded Universe (Legends). This included using West End’s aliens, starships and planets in films, novels and other official Lucasfilm projejcts.
  • Fantasy Flight Games (2012–2021): After taking over the license from WotC, Fantasy Flight released Star Wars Roleplaying. The game was split into three thematic experiences: Edge of the Empire (smugglers and outlaws), Age of Rebellion (military campaigns) and Force and Destiny (Jedi and Force users). The rules involved rolling custom narrative dice, allowing players and GMs to create unique storytelling experiences during play (these rules would later go on to form the popular Genesys system, which has since inspired modern TTRPGs like Daggerheart).
  • Edge Studios (2021 – Present): In 2021, Edge Studios took over the Star Wars license from Fantasy Flight Games (both are subsidiaries of board game giant Asmodee) and announced plans to create new content. While this has yet to materialize, in more recent years Edge Studios has been releasing reprints of Fantasy Flight’s Star Wars RPG supplements.

Final thoughts

The crossover between D&D and Star Wars represents a massive possibility for both brands. Whether the final product lives up to its potential, however, is something even a Jedi master can’t forsee.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on this story in the days ahead and will update this page with new information as it’s made available. Below is also the official D&D Keynote video on YouTube, timestamped to the section featuring the Star Wars announcement.
