D&D Onslaught Gets New “Tomb of Horrors” Expansion

WizKids’ popular skirmish board game Dungeons & Dragons Onslaught is getting a a brand new expansion inspired by one D&D’s most iconic adventures. Tomb of Horrors: Maps & Monsters is based loosely on the 1978 D&D module of the same name and includes new tokens, map tiles, cards, scenario and a new cooperative gameplay format.

It’s worth noting that you will need either the D&D Onslaught core set or the Tendrils of the Lichen Lich starter set to be able to use this expansion, so if you’re new to Onslaught this definitely isn’t the first product you’ll want to pick up. Instead, it’s really designed for existing players looking to expand the materials they already own.

So just what else is included in this board game reimagining of the Tomb of Horrors? Below, we plunge into all the details.

  • 16 Trap Tokens
  • 8 Door Tokens
  • 4 Map Tokens

It also include news rules for a cooperative gameplay mode (which is a departure from Onslaught’s normal PvP skirmish system) and allows players to use characters and treasure cards from any of the previously released sets. Surprisingly, however, Tomb of Horrors does not contain any new miniatures (which is a hallmark off both Onslaught and its creator WizKids), but does include suggestions for how you can replace the cardboard monster tokens with existing minis from WizKids’ D&D line.

What is D&D Onslaught?

Dungeons & Dragons Onslaught is a two-player competitive skirmish game developed by WizKids. In the game, each player controls an adventuring party aligned with Forgotten Realms factions such as the Harpers, Red Wizards of Thay and the Zhentarim. Players are presented with a number of specific pre-made scenarios that involve exploring dungeons, battling monsters and taking on the other players’ adventuring parties. The goal is to collect treasure and earn experience points in order to level up characters as each scenario is completed.

The core gameplay resolves actions and combat using a system of dice rolls, upgrade cards and a figure base dial that’s similar to the popular HeroClix miniatures combat game, which is also developed by WizKids.
