Despite airing over 40 years ago, the Dungeons & Dragons Saturday morning cartoon has continued to live on over the decades, with the characters appearing in a live action car commercial, an updated comic book series, a line of designer action figures, and even a cameo in the DnD Honor Among Thieves film.
Now, the 80s cartoon is back in the spotlight in a brand new adventure entitled Uni And the Hunt for the Lost Horn, the first official module to use the DnD 2024 rules and currently available for free to download on D&D Beyond.
So does the legend of Uni live on in this modern module? Below, we horn in on all the details.
What is “Uni And the Hunt for the Lost Horn”?
Uni and the Hunt for the Lost Horn is a DnD one shot adventure designed for four to six Level 4 characters. The adventure is based on the 1980s Dungeons & Dragons animated series, with pre-made character sheets for the show’s six heroes: Bobby, Diana, Eric, Hank, Presto and Sheila, all of whom are now grown up and more experienced (hence the Level 4 start). A seventh character sheet is also available for the Cleric Niko, a new hero in the D&D multiverse. That being said, you can make your own character if you wish, although a big part of the fun is continuing the adventures of the characters from the show.
The plot follows the machinations of Kelek, an evil wizard who previously appeared in the ’80s D&D animated TV show as a servant to the villain Venger, later resurfacing in the 1983 module The Shady Dragon Inn and even getting his own action figure. In this most recent incarnation, Kelek has stolen the horn of Uni the Unicorn and is using it in a foul ritual. It’s up to the players to stop Kelek and recover the horn before it’s too late.
Notably, the adventure first premiered at PAX West 2024 before being released on D&D Beyond and is the first official Wizards of the Coast adventure to use the new DnD 2024 rules
What was the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon series about?
The Dungeons & Dragons animated series ran for three seasons between 1983 and 1985, with 27 total episodes. The show follows six friends who are transported from modern day Earth to a fantasy world known as “the Realm” after riding a magical roller coaster. Once there, each of them is given a magical weapon and assumes a class from the game: Hank the Ranger, Eric the Cavalier, Diana the Acrobat, Presto the Magician, Sheila the Thief and Bobby the Barbarian. Guided by the mysterious Dungeon Master, with help from their sidekick Uni the Unicorn, they embark on various quests to find a way back to their own world.
The group’s primary adversary is Venger, a powerful and malevolent sorcerer who seeks to control the Realm and claim their magical weapons for himself. Alongside Venger, they must also face other threats, including the five-headed dragon Tiamat.
More recently, the six heroes from the show have recently resurfaced in interior art in the new 2024 Player’s Handbook (seen below) while Venger also graces the cover of the upcoming 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide.
Final Thoughts
For all of its cheesy campiness, the Dungeons & Dragons animated series is a beloved part of the game’s lore and it’s great to see it living on in this new adventure. It’s a chance for both novice and returning player to dig into an adventure that’s packed with both new rules and old school nostalgia.
You can currently download Uni and the Hunt for the Lost Horn for free on D&D Beyond.
