Dark Horse to Launch New Line of DnD Comics

Over the years Dungeons & Dragons has appeared in countless mediums, including video games, novels, trading cards, board games, TV and film. Yet one of the most endearing representations has been the long line of DnD comics, which have been around almost as long as the game itself and been produced by major publishers including DC Comics and Marvel.

Now, popular indie publisher Dark Horse Comics will be releasing the next wave of DnD comics after taking over the reins from IDW Comics, who had maintained the brand license from Wizards of the Coast for the past 14 years.

So just what does this mean for fans of both fantasy and funny books? Below, we break out all the details.

What is the new Dark Horse DnD Comics Line?

According to a press release from Dark Horse, the new publishing line will include both comic books and graphic novels based on the worlds of Dungeon & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering.

The first series will debut in the summer of 2025 and eventually will also include art books and other materials. Notably, this isn’t the first time Dark Horse has worked with Wizards of the Coast, with the two collaborating in the late ’90s on the the Magic: The Gathering: Gerrard’s Quest series and more recently the Stranger Things and Dungeon & Dragons miniseries.

The partnership will be overseen by Dark Horse senior editor Spencer Cushing. “If you’d told my 12-year-old self I’d get to work with incredible writers and artists to craft comics for Dungeon & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering alongside such thoughtful and creative stewards of these licenses, I wouldn’t have believed you,” says Cushing. “The opportunity to work with Wizards of the Coast is a dream come true.”

Hasbro Senior Vice President Marianne James will also be overseeing the collaboration on the Wizards of the Coast side. “Dungeon & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering are two legendary games with incredibly strong fandoms and world-building gameplay,” says James. “We are dedicated to expanding these universes through unique brand offerings and world-class partnerships, ultimately bringing players and fans new, exciting ways to engage with these iconic franchise brands. From this licensed publishing program with Dark Horse Comics, we anticipate a lot of excitement to come with new artwork and creative storytelling.”

Final Thoughts

It’s great to see that DnD comics are alive and well, and Dark Horse has a solid reputation for visual storytelling, having worked with huge brands like Star Wars, Conan the Barbarian and Halo, while also publishing original indie titles like Hellboy, The Goon and Usagi Yojimbo. Notably, the publisher has also dipped its toe in the TTRPG space with its line of Critical Role comics.
