What is the original Tyranny of Dragons campaign about?
Tyranny of Dragons is a campaign Dungeons & Dungeons that was originally published in 2014 (making it the first official adventure to launch for the fifth edition rules). The campaign itself was broken out into two books: Hoard of the Dragon Queen (released in August 2014) and The Rise of Tiamat (released in November 2014). In January 2023, Wizards of the Coast combined both titles into a single book which was known as the Tyranny of Dragons Rerelease. Interestingly, the campaign was actually written and designed by Wolfgang Baur and Steve Winter of Kobold Press, which was working under a contract from WotC at the time.
Set in the Forgotten Realms, the campaign takes players from Level 1 to 15 and involves the Cult of the Dragon as they seek to free the evil dragon goddess Tiamat from her prison in the Nine Hells. Characters begin as fledgling adventurers and are quickly drawn into a far-reaching plot, traveling across the Sword Coast to stop the cult’s schemes, while uncovering their alliances and rallying support from rival factions. The story mixes classic high fantasy adventure with political intrigue, taking players from bloodsoaked battlefields to council chambers. The adventure culminates in a high-stakes confrontation, with the fate of the Realms hanging in the balance.

Final Thoughts
The original Tyranny of Dragons is a solid campaign, but not without its faults (including a long and drawn out travel section in the middle of the adventure) so it’ll be interesting to see if Beadle & Grimm’s are able to breathe new life into it almost a decade after it was first released.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on this product and updating it with new information in the days ahead. In the meantime, you can pre-order your copy of the Legendary Edition of Tyranny of Dragons now via the B&G website.
