Renegade Game Studios is bringing back one of the most popular D&D board games of all time, with a new version of the iconic Castle Ravenloft.
First released back in 2010 by Wizards of the Coast, this upcoming reprint is being produced by third-party publisher Renegade Game Studios using the official D&D license, and will feature new art, miniatures and components, while still using the same rules as the original game.
The game will be coming out in February 2027 but is available for pre-order now from local game stores and Renegade Game Studios. Below, we take a closer look at what to expect when Strahd invites you and your crew over for game night.

What is the D&D Castle Ravenloft board game about?
Castle Ravenloft is a cooperative board game that can be played solo or with up to five players, and uses the D&D Adventure System, which has been featured in a variety of other co-op Dungeons & Dragons board games, including Wrath of Ashardalon, The Legend of Drizzt, Temple of Elemental Evil, Tomb of Annihilation and Dungeon of the Mad Mage.
The system (which was originally based on the D&D 4th edition rules) is designed to recreate the TTRPG experience as a board game, and features familiar mechanics like levelling up, battling monsters and dungeon crawling. Sessions can usually be completed in about 1-2 hours and require no previous knowledge of D&D to play.
As the name suggests, the game takes place in Castle Ravenloft, the ancestral home of the dreaded vampire lord Strahd von Zarovich. The game features 13 unique adventure scenarios, which have their own specific goals, such as retrieving a magic artifact or taking on Strahd himself.
Each player starts by choosing a character, drawing from familiar D&D classes like Cleric, Fighter, Ranger, Rogue and Wizard. On their turn, a player can enter further into the dungeon (turning over tiles that reveal new monsters, treasure and traps), move through an area that’s already been revealed or battle monsters. Defeated monsters provide both treasure and experience points, allowing players to level up their characters. Players must cooperate to stay alive, battle monsters and complete adventure objectives.

What’s included in the new Castle Ravenloft board game?
The standard version of the game includes the following:
- 40 Interlocking Dungeon Tiles (plus an additional Starting tile)
- 42 unpainted miniatures (5 heroes, 30 monsters and 7 villains)
- 209 cards (including heroes, villains, monsters and treasure)
- 192 tokens (covering hit points, items, traps and actions)
- 1 Adventure Book (with 13 quests to choose from)
- 1 Rulebook
- 1 20-sided Die
Notably, a Premium Version is also available, which contains all of the components as the standard version, with the exception that the 42 miniatures are pre-painted.

When is the new Castle Ravenloft board game coming out?
The game will be released in February 2027, at which point it will be available online and at local game stores. We’ll update this page with an exact date once it’s been confirmed.
How much is the new Castle Ravenloft board game?
The standard version retails for $100 USD (not including shipping and handling), while the premium edition retails for $200 USD (as noted above, the only difference between the two versions is that the premium contains pre-painted miniatures).

Final thoughts
The original Castle Ravenloft remains a beloved – and now sadly out of print – game that’s been well reviewed by both board game and D&D fans alike, so it’s great to see it getting a new lease on life from Renegade Game Studios.
It also follows up on the recently released Ravenloft: Horrified board game expansion and comes hot on the heels of D&D’s return to the Domains of Dread with Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, which was part of the larger Season of Horror initiative that ran from April to June 2026.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on the new Castle Ravenloft board game in the days ahead and will be doing a complete review closer to launch. In the meantime, you can pre-order a copy now from your local game stores and Renegade Game Studios.
