Dark Horse Comics has just revealed more details on a new ongoing Dungeons & Dragons comic book series. The series was first previewed back in May 2026 for Free Comic Book Day, with a digital version later released on D&D Beyond.
The ongoing series will be written by Eisner-nominated creators Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly with art by Ibraim Roberson. Issue #1 will be released on November 4th, 2026, with pre-orders available now from local comic book stores.

What is the new Dark Horse D&D comic book series about?
According to a blog post from Dark Horse, the new series will follow the adventures of the legendary wizard Mordenkainen, who has been stripped of his powers and hurled across the multiverse to the Forgotten Realms. There, he must face down an apocalyptic draconic entity and assemble a team of heroes that includes the famed explorer Volothamp Geddarm and the powerful wizard Tasha.
Dark Horse has said that the series will lean heavily into D&D’s actual mechanics and spells, in addition to featuring a range of iconic characters, creatures and locations. Each issue will also include an essay written by a D&D luminary or functional D&D game materials that Dungeon Masters can actually use at the table. Issue #1 kicks things off with an exclusive community essay penned by voice actor and Dimension 20 live-play star Erika Ishii.
Who is the creative team behind the new Dark Horse D&D comic?
The new ongoing D&D comic book series is written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, both of whom have worked on a variety of comics together for publishers including DC, Marvel, BOOM! Studios and IDW. In 2023, they were nominated for the “Best New Series” Eisner Award for Star Trek. Both also appeared in the sci-fi actual play series Vast, which aired on Geek and Sundry back in 2016, so the two clearly have a love of TTRPGs.
The artwork features penciller Ibraim Roberson, inker Arabson Oliveira, colorist Dan Brown, and letterer Haley-Rose Lyon. The debut issue will also include variant covers by Esad Ribić, Karen Darboe and Mateus Manhanini, along with a foil variant by Antonio José Manzanedo and a rare 1:25 incentive variant by Eric Canete. There will also be an alternate cover created by longtime Wizards of the Coast artist Tyler Jacobson, who has provided art for a number of major official D&D publications.
What other Dark Horse D&D comics are in the works?
The new ongoing Dungeons & Dragons series is one of several new comic book projects from Dark Horse, which originally picked up the license from Wizards of the Coast back in 2025. This includes:
- Dungeons & Dragons: The Fallbacks: The initial miniseries that launched Dark Horse’s D&D license, with a series based on the popular Forgotten Realms Fallbacks novels by author Jaleigh Johnson.
- Dungeons & Dragons: Total Party Killers: A comedic take on traditional dungeon crawls that flips the script by following a group of misfit monsters who are tasked with defending their dungeon from invading adventuring parties.
- Dungeons & Dragons: Ravenloft: A four-issue gothic horror miniseries set in the Domains of Dread that follows the adventures of mad scientist Viktra Mordenheim.
Final thoughts
While there’s no shortage of D&D comic books, this new project from Dark Horse is the first ongoing series in several years, so there’s a lot riding on its success. Whether it can capture the interest of fans from both the comic book and D&D communities, however, remains to be seen.
