D&D Beyond & Dark Horse Release Free Comic Book Online

On May 2nd, 2026, North America celebrated yet another Free Comic Book Day, which saw local stores offering a variety of books from dozens of publishers. As part of the event, publisher Dark Horse Comics released Dungeons & Dragons: Magefall, a short standalone comic written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, and illustrated by Alessandro Miracolo, with a short story featuring the legendary D&D wizard Mordenkainen.

The good news is that if you missed out on Free Comic Book Day, you can still pick up a copy at no cost, albeit in a completely digital form on D&D Beyond. Below, we flip through at all the details.

What is the Dungeons & Dragons: Magefall comic book about?

Magefall is a short, 10-page comic book that follows the legendary Archmage Mordenkainen (of Greyhawk fame) who is now dwelling in an isolated sanctuary in the frozen north of the Forgotten Realms. He is soon confronted by a powerful female orc monk named Zael, the Grandmaster of Flowers and a servant of the benevolent dragon god Bahamut, who states that Mordenkainen is at the heart of a prophecy which threatens to destroy all of the multiverse.

It’s a short but sweet encounter, and the end of the issue has a single preview page at the very end that suggests we’ll be seeing the rest of the Dungeons & Dragons: Magefall series later this Fall (although no further details have been released by either Wizards of the Coast or Dark Horse).

Who is the creative team on the D&D: Magefall comic?

The team working on the Free Comic Book Day issue (and presumably the larger Magefall series slated for release this year), consists of the writing duo of Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, both of whom have worked on a variety of comics together for publishers including DC, Marvel, Boom Studios! and IDW. In 2023, they were nominated for the “Best New Series” Eisner Award for Star Trek. Both also appeared in the sci-fi actual play series Vast, which aired on Geek and Sundry back in 2016, so the two clearly have a love of TTRPGs.

The primary artist on the book is Alessandro Miracolo, who is best known for his work as a penciller for Dynamite and Marvel, including working on the series Phoenix, Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Coloring is by Italian artist Valentina Taddeo (who has worked extensively for publishers such as IDW and DC) and lettering is from Eisner-winning artist Haley Rose-Lyon.

Final Thoughts

Releasing a free comic book on D&D Beyond is a first for Wizards of the Coast, but isn’t surprising given the more aggressive franchise model Wizards of the Coast has adopted. It also marks the fourth D&D comic book series from Dark Horse following their acquisition of the license back in July of 2024, with upcoming books including The Fallbacks series (based on the D&D novels of the same name), Total Party Killers (which follows a group of down-on-their-luck dungeon-dwelling monsters) and a Ravenloft series.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on the upcoming D&D Magefall comic book in the days ahead. In the meantime, subscribers can download the Free Comic Book Day preview now on D&D Beyond.
