New D&D Romantasy Novel “The Feywild Job” Announced

A new Dungeons & Dragons novel is coming out this spring from Penguin Random House that’s a bit of a departure from other recent D&D literary releases. Entitled The Feywild Job, the book is written by Nebula and World Fantasy Award winning author C.L. Polk, and is billed as a cozy, fantasy romance novel with a dash of heist elements thrown in for good measure. It will be coming out later this summer, but is available for pre-order now from your book store and on Amazon.

So what can readers expect in this new romantasy take on D&D? Below, we swoon into all the details.

What is the “The Feywild Job” about?

The official book page synopsis from Penguin Random House reads as follows:

Sparks fly when bitter exes are forced to team up for an elaborate Feywild heist, in this cozy fantasy romance by the bestselling author of the Kingston Cycle and Even Though I Knew the End.

Saeldian has sworn never to fall in love. That oath isn’t just a personal promise, but rather a magical pact, granting them powerful abilities. The only catch? They must never give their heart away—a deal that Saeldian is perfectly content with. They’ve seen firsthand how messy love can get.

Saeldian prefers their no-strings-attached life as a con artist, pulling off heists and leaving a trail of broken hearts behind them. But when a grift goes horribly wrong, they catch the eye of a mysterious patron with a job offer they can’t refuse.

The mission? Steal a gem called “The Kiss of Enduring Love” and return it to the Feywild. Simple enough, until Saeldian discovers their ex-partner, Kell—a charming bard—is part of the team.

The last time Saeldian saw Kell, things hardly ended on good terms. A kiss became a betrayal, leaving Kell hurt and confused for almost a decade. But Kell can’t just walk away—not when this job might finally be his ticket back to the Feywild.

Forced to work together again, their adventure takes them from high-society parties to Feywild couple’s therapy. But as Saeldian and Kell rekindle their chemistry, they realize the gem is much more than a fey bauble, and their simple heist has summoned powerful enemies. . . .

Who is author C.L. Polk?

C. L. Polk is a Canadian fantasy author who is best known for their debut novel Witchmark which won the World Fantasy Award in 2019 and is the first book in the popular Kingston Cycle series. Polk’s novella Even Though I Knew the End also won the Nebula Award for Best Novella in 2022 and their short story “Ivy, Angelica, Bay” was also a. finalist for the 2023 Hugo Award.

Polk identifies as non-binary (using they/them pronouns) and currently resides in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It’s not clear what experience they have with Dungeons & Dragons, but getting an author of this caliber to contribute to a D&D novel is definitely a huge coup for the D&D literary brand.

Final Thoughts

It’s interesting to see the D&D literary brand veer into the genre of romantasy (which has become increasingly popular in recent years) and to pull in a high profile author like C.L. Polk.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on this story in the days ahead and will provide a complete review of the book closer to launch. In the meantime, you pre-order The Feywild Job now from your local game store, book store and on Amazon.
