New D&D Spells Revealed for Upcoming Forgotten Realms Book

Wizards of the Coast has just provided a sneak peak of two new spells that will be appearing in the upcoming Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerûn player guide. Both use the new D&D 2024 core rules and have not appeared in any previous books. The two spells can also be amplified with Circle Magic, which is a completely new group casting mechanic that will also appear in the book.

The spells in question are Doomtide (which creates a field of psychic darkness) and Spellfire Storm (which summons a wave of radiant flame). Below, we conjure up all the details on these new incantations.

Doomtide (Spell Details)

This spell allows you to creates a 20-foot-radius Sphere of inky, magical Darkness that deals 5d6 Psychic damage to creatures caught within. In addition, any targets caught in the spell who fail their saving throw also subtract 1d6 from all saving throws until the end of their next turn.

You can also cast Doomtide as a Circle spell with at least five secondary casters, which allows you to extend the spell’s range to 1 mile and sustain its power until dispelled, freeing it from the limits of Concentration. On top of the rare components, each secondary caster must also expend a level 3+ spell slot; otherwise, the spell fails.

Spellfire Storm (Spell Details)

This spell conjure a 20-foot-radius, 20-foot-high Cylinder pillar of Spellfire that deals 4d10 Radiant damage to creatures within it. It also interferes with any creatures who attempt to cast spells from inside the pillar’s area of effect.

When cast as Spellfire Storm as a Circle spell, you can expend a blue star sapphire worth 25,000+ GP to extend the spell’s range to 1 mile and anchor its power within the circle so it no longer requires Concentration. On top of the component cost, each secondary caster must also expend a level 3+ spell slot.

Final Thoughts

It’s great to see Wizards of the Coast continuing to release new spells for the 2024 rules, particularly ones that tap into the new Circle Magic group casting. It’s not clear what other new spells will also be included in the upcoming Forgotten Realms sourcebooks and whether or not they’ll live up to player expectations.

You can find the complete rules for both new spells in the upcoming Heroes of Faerûn sourcebook, which is available for pre-order now on D&D Beyond and Amazon.

Cameron Nichols is a Senior Editor who lives in Boston, Massachusetts, and has been playing D&D since the early 90s, when he was introduced by his older brother and cut his teeth on AD&D 2nd Edition. Since then he’s played virtually every RPG he could get his nerdy little mitts on (including a weird Goth phase in the early 2000s when he rocked Vampire: The Masquerade pretty hard). His favorite D&D campaign setting is the Forgotten Realms and his favorite character to play was a Half-Orc Barbarian named Grug (who was unfortunately devoured by a gelatinous cube).
