D&D Collection Sets Record Breaking Price at Auction

Heritage Auctions, one of the world’s leading collectible auction houses, has just released a large collection of vintage Dungeons & Dragons books that are expected to potentially fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars. The auction is on now and will officially end on October 16th, 2025 and features a number of iconic D&D titles from the late 1970s and 1980s.

Interested parties will be able to bid on individual products, which is taken from a single seller’s collection and includes a number of rare finds. Below, we take a look at what’s included in this hoard of D&D history.

What D&D items are included in the Heritage auction?

In total there are 149 items available in the auction, most of which are from the 1st and 2nd editions of Dungeons & Dragons. Many of the items are also professionally graded by CGC, a company which is primarily known for their comic book appraisals. These items are encapsulated in hard plastic containers (known as “slabs”), with higher grade products naturally fetching higher value among collectors.

Some of the most valuable items up for grabs include:

  • The “Wood Grain” D&D boxed set: First published by TSR in 1975, reportedly only 1,000 copies exist. Previous copies in decent condition have sold for as much as as $22,000 at auction. This particular collection includes both the second and third printings.
  • The D&D “Red Box”: The collection includes a sealed copy of the popular 1983 Basic Set (also known as the “Red Box), which features the now iconic artwork from Larry Elmore. While the red box is relatively common, there are only a few copies the remain unopened.
  • Danger at Dunwater: This 1982 module for D&D 1e is a classic adventure that was included in the more recent Ghost of Saltmarsh D&D 5e campaign. The copy in this collection is grade at 9.8 by CGC, making it one of the more valuable items in the set.
  • Blackmoor Supplement: The collection also includes the legendary Blackmoor Supplement which was first developed by D&D co-creator Dave Arneson.

How much is the entire D&D collection worth at auction?

It’s difficult to say for certain how much the entire collection is worth, but it’s most likely to fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars in total. We’ll know the final dollar amounts for many of these items once the auction ends on October 16th.

Final Thoughts

It’s incredible to think that Dungeons & Dragons books have gone from being minor pop culture curios to graded collectibles that are now highly sought after by fans and historians alike. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this auction in the days ahead to see how it all shakes out.

In the meantime, if you’re interested in picking up any of the D&D items being auctioned, you can place your bid now on the Heritage website.

Cameron Nichols is a Senior Editor who lives in Boston, Massachusetts, and has been playing D&D since the early 90s, when he was introduced by his older brother and cut his teeth on AD&D 2nd Edition. Since then he’s played virtually every RPG he could get his nerdy little mitts on (including a weird Goth phase in the early 2000s when he rocked Vampire: The Masquerade pretty hard). His favorite D&D campaign setting is the Forgotten Realms and his favorite character to play was a Half-Orc Barbarian named Grug (who was unfortunately devoured by a gelatinous cube).
