First appearing in 2004 in the Eberron Campaign Setting sourcebook, the Warforged has since become one of Dungeons & Dragons’ most unique and popular species. In fact, over the past two decades they’ve appeared as a playable character option in every edition of the game, including a DnD 5e version for in the 2019 supplement Eberron: Rising from the Last War.
Now, the Warforged is back, albeit with a few mechanical modifications to work with the new DnD 2024 rules. They’ll be officially appearing in the upcoming supplement Eberron: Forge of the Artificer, which is currently slated for a December 2025 release. In preparation for the launch, however, Wizards of the Coast has released a few new details on what to expect.
So is the 2025 Warforged a new and improved version? Below, we gear up and put together all the pieces.

What are Warforged in DnD 2025?
Warforged are sentient constructs originally crafted as tireless soldiers during the devastating Last War that ravaged the continent of Khorvaire in the world of Eberron. Created from materials such as metal and wood, Warforged are then magically imbued with consciousness and self-awareness, making them living entities rather than mere automatons. In fact, like other living beings, each Warforged possesses a unique personality and sense of identity that’s shaped by their intended purpose and the experiences they’ve accumulated since their awakening.
Since the war’s end, many Warforged have adapted to civilian life, becoming artisans, adventurers or explorers, while others continue to wrestle with lingering prejudice from a world uncertain how to accept them. Notably, within the lore of Eberron, Warforged technology was widely available, but was perfected by House Cannith. Following the signing of the Treaty of Thronehold at the end of the conflict however, Warforged have officially been granted their freedom and the Creation Forges which manufactured them are now outlawed.

What’s changed in the new 2025 Warforged?
While the Warforged species has been around for almost two decades, Eberron: Forge of the Artificer does introduce a number of minor changes from their previous Warforged iteration that appeared in Eberron: Rising from the Last War back in 2019.
| Warforged Species Trait | Level | Changed from Eberron: Rising from the Last War? | Changes to the 2025 Warforged |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ability Score Improvements | 1 | Yes | Races/species no longer provide ability score improvements. Instead, character nows receive these bonuses from the new DnD backgrounds. |
| Creature Type | 1 | Yes | The 2025 Warforged is now considered a Construct creature type (in the 2019 rules, they were considered Humanoid). |
| Constructed Resilience | 1 | Yes | The 2025 version of this trait grants you advantage on saving throws against Poison. The 2019 version offered the same benefit, but also granted you resistance to Poison damage and immunity to Disease. The trait also allowed you to function without the need eat, drink, breathe or sleep. |
| Sentry’s Rest | 1 | Yes | The 2025 version means that you don’t need to sleep and magic can’t put you to sleep. In the 2019 version, this benefit lived under the “Constructed Resilience” trait (see above) |
| Integrated Protection | 1 | Yes | The 2025 version of this Feat is identical to the 2019 version, with the exception that donning Armor no longer takes an hour. |
| Specialized Design | 1 | Yes | This feature has been removed from the 2025 Warforged. In the 2019 version, you gained one skill proficiency and one tool proficiency of your choice. |
| Tireless | 1 | Yes | This is a new trait for the 2025 Warforged which means you don’t gain Exhaustion from dehydration, malnutrition or suffocation. In 2019, this benefit previously lived under the “Constructed Resilience” trait (see above). |

What are the Warforged species traits in 2025?
Below are the full list of all the Warforged traits using the new 2025 rules from Eberron: Forge of the Artificer.
- Creature Type: Construct
- Size: Medium
- Speed: 30 feet

As a Warforged, you have the following special traits.
- Constructed Resilience: You have advantage on all saving throws against Poison.

- Tireless: You don’t gain any Exhaustion levels from dehydration, malnutrition or suffocation.

Is the new 2025 Warforged worth playing?
The Warforged is one of the most unusual species in DnD 5e, so expectations for this update are high. That being said, other than a new minor adjustments the new 2025 version appears virtually identical to its older model. And while we won’t see the final product until December 2025, for now, it’s looking like a fresh coat of paint, but little else going on under the hood in terms of modifications.
You can find the complete rules for the new Warforged in the upcoming Eberron: Forge of the Artificer sourcebook, which is available for pre-order now on D&D Beyond or on Amazon.
