New DnD Book “Eberron: Forge of the Artificer” Announced for 2025

First published in 2004 as the winning entry in a Wizards of the Coast fan contest, the world of Eberron has since become one of Dungeons & Dragons’ most popular campaign settings. In fact, over the past twenty years its appeared in dozens of sourcebooks across multiple editions of D&D, introducing the Artificer class. and even spawning a slew of novels along the way.

And yet, despite its popularity, Eberron has appeared only sporadically in DnD fifth edition. In fact, the last official publication from Wizards of the Coast was in 2019 with the campaign sourcebook Eberron: Rising from the Last War. Since then, the setting has largely been supported by game designer Keith Baker who, despite being the original creator of the setting, is no longer involved with Wizards of the Coast and has published only three new Eberron books under the Open Game License via DMsGuild.

Fortunately, it looks like fans we’ll soon be getting even more from the lands of Khorvaire, with Wizards of the Coast recently announcing a new sourcebook entitled Eberron: Forge of the Artificer, which is slated for release in August 2025. Below, we piece together everything we know so far.

What is “Eberron: Forge of the Artificer” about?

At a January 2025 closed door press event, Wizards of the Coast described Eberron: Forge of the Artificer as a “companion” book to Eberron: Rising From The Last War. In this sense, the book will explore new content that hasn’t appeared in any previous official or unofficial fifth edition materials.

In particular, Forge of the Artificer will include new backgrounds, new Bastion options and expanded rules for airships. The book will also feature some significant changes to both lore and mechanics that are specific to Eberron. For example, Dragonmarked Houses will no longer be limited by species (which was the case with Rising from the Last War). Dragonmarks will also now fall under the new 2024 Feats rather than having a separate system. In addition, the rules will now categorize Khoravar as a distinct species, as in the 2019 rules they are technically considered half-elves (a “half” designation which no longer exists in the 2024 rules). The book will also feature the new Artificer class, which was opened up for playtesting in December 2024 via Unearthed Arcana.

While the book won’t include a full campaign, it will feature three chapters that include sample adventures that can be reworked to as “campaign options.” These are entitled: Sharn Inquisitives, Dragonmark Intrigue and Morgrave Expeditions, and will use the more streamlined adventure prep outline that’s been featured in the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide.

During the press event, lead D&D game designer Jeremy Crawford described the book as essentially Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, but specific to Eberron. He also noted that all of the material will be fully compatible with the new 2024 Player’s Handbook, in addition to including new subclasses, feats and backgrounds. It was also announced that Eberron creator Keith Baker had been brought on as a consultant for the book.

What other Eberron books are available for DnD 5e?

Over the past 20 years, the vast majority of Eberron game books were published for the third and fourth editions of DnD. In more recent years, there have been only a handful of products for fifth edition, with only one official Wizards of the Coast book and three third-party books (the latter of which are available only on DMsGuild).

  • Eberron: Rising from the Last War: Published in 2019 from Wizards of the Coast, this official DnD 5e sourcebook introduces the world of Eberron, with a deep dive into the lore of the world and its unique blend of steampunk, pulp noir, military action and traditional fantasy. It also includes new character options like the Artificer class and Warforged species
  • Exploring Eberron: Published in 2020 via DMsGuild and written by Eberron creator Keith Baker, this sourcebook offers a deeper dive into the unique cultures and history of Eberron. It includes expanded lore on species and nations, along with new subclasses, magic items and player character options.
  • Chronicles of Eberron: Published in 2022 and also written by Keith Baker for DMsGuild, this supplement expands on the world of Eberron, with new lore, adventure hooks and game mechanics.
  • Frontiers of Eberron: Quickstone: Published in 2024 via DMsGuild, Keith Baker has reportedly said this is the last Eberron book he will work on. This regional supplement focusing on the Western Frontier of Khorvaire, lawless land of opportunity, strange magic and ancient secrets with a unique Wild West theme.

The book is scheduled for release on August 19th, 2025. It’s possible you may be able to access the book several weeks earlier if you pre-order it via D&D Beyond or as a physical copy of the book from any local game store that is enrolled in Wizards of the Coast’s DnD early access program. (Although it’s not yet clear what format the book will entail, and it’s possible it may be released as a digital only product.

How much is “Eberron: Forge of the Artificer”?

According to Wizards of the Coast, the book will also have a different page count and price point than typical DnD 5e books, although no further details have been provided as to how this will impact the overall cost.

What other tie-in products will be available?

Currently, Wizards of the Coast has not confirmed whether there will be any tie-in products. It’s possible, however, that we may see tie-in miniatures from WizKids or limited edition materials from Beadle & Grimm’s (although in all likelihood we would have heard about these products by now). Wizards of the Coast has said they will be announcing more in the coming months and will be showcasing the product at upcoming conventions.

It’s also likely that Eberron: Forge of the Artificer will integrate with the upcoming DnD virtual tabletop (also known as Project Sigil), which is currently in open Beta testing. The book will also likely be available on all major VTT platforms, such as Foundry and Roll20.

Final Thoughts

Eberron remains a beloved campaign setting for Dungeons & Dragons, so it’s great to see that Wizards of the Coast is supporting it with the new 2024 rules. In fact, if nothing else, the inclusion of the new Artificer is something that was clearly missing with the updated Player’s Handbook. The addition of new lore, mechanics, adventure materials and player content – not to mention the involvement of Keith Baker – is just as enticing and sounds like a solid return to one of the multiverse’s most unique worlds.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on this story in the days ahead and will update this page with more information on Eberron: Forge of the Artificer as it’s made available.
