The world of Greyhawk has been a central part of Dungeons & Dragons since the earliest edition of the game, spawning a number of characters, spells, magic items and gods that have since become a key part of D&D lore. In recent years, however, the setting have been largely overlooked by Wizards of the Coast.
That”s about to change, however, with Greyhawk receiving a whole chapter in the new 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide. Unfortunately, it looks like that might be the last we see of official content for some time, as Wizards of the Coast recently stated that they have no plans for future Greyhawk books. The good news, however, is that WotC has recently opened up the world of Greyhawk to third-party creators on the DMsGuild platform.
So just what does this mean for both players and publishers looking to venture into Oerth? Below, we break out all the details.
Who can create Greyhawk DnD content on DMsGuild?
For almost a decade now, the official DMsGuild Content Guidelines stated that users can create and upload content only if it is using the DnD 5e rules and set in the official Wizards of the Coast worlds of the Forgotten Realms, Ravenloft, Eberron, Spelljammer, Planescape, Dragonlance, the Radiant Citadel, Ravnica, Theros or Strixhaven.
Now, Greyhawk has been added to the list of official settings. This means that anyone, be it an individual designer or a full third-party publisher, can create adventures or campaign supplements set in the world of Oerth.
What official Greyhawk content is on DMsGuild?
Currently, there are a number of official Greyhawk materials available on DMsGuild, all of which are for older editions of D&D. Some of the most popular include:
- Tomb of Horrors: One of the most infamous and deadly dungeons of all time, it has appeared in every edition of the game, including most recently in the DnD 5e adventure anthology Tales from the Yawning Portal
- White Plume Mountain: A classic old school adventure that was given a 20th anniversary update with the adventure Return to White Plume Mountain.
- The Temple of Elemental Evil: A legendary dungeon crawl developed by Gary Gygax and expanding on his original adventure The Village of Homlett.
- The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh: The start of a series of adventurers set around the coastal village of Saltmarsh. Notably, many of these adventures were updated for DnD 5e in the adventure anthology the Ghosts of Saltmarsh,
- Against the Giants: A series of three adventure that pits the characters against an army of giants. These adventures were drawn on as the primary inspiration for the DnD 5e campaign Storm King’s Thunder.
- Expedition to the Barrier Peaks: One of the most popular dungeons of all time, the adventure combines fantasy and sci-fi elements and most reently appeared the in the DnD 5e adventure anthology Quests from the Infinite Staircase.
Final thoughts
After 50 years, the Greyhawk setting is still going strong, but its return in 2024 is bittersweet. One one hand, it gets top billing in the new Dungeon Master’s Guide. On the other hand, Wizards of the Coast has said they have no further plans to develop the setting. The good news is that DMsGuild is putting the world of Oerth into the hands of fans and third-party publishers. It remains to be seen, however, what they do with it.
You can pick up existing Greyhawk DnD materials or submit your own by visiting DMsGuild.
