New “Builders of Baldur’s Gate” Board Game Announced

Over the past 50 years, Dungeons & Dragons has spawned countless official DnD board games steeped in the lore and gameplay mechanics of the popular tabletop roleplaying game. In recent years, many of these have been published by WizKids, a company best known for their range of pre-painted miniatures and other DnD accessories. This includes titles like Trials of Tempus and Onslaught, both of which have been well-received by both DnD fans and board game aficionados alike.

Now, WizKids has unveiled yet another new board game entitled Dungeons & Dragons: Builders of Baldur’s Gate, a city-building resource management game that has players taking control of one powerful family in the City of Blood and attempting to grow their power and influence. The game will be coming out in June 2025 with a $64.99 USD price tag, but is available for pre-order now from your local game store or WizKids. Below, we hammer together everything we know so far.

What is “Builders of Baldur’s Gate”?

Builders of Baldur’s Gate is a two to four player competitive city-building and resource management game. Players take on the role of the head of a powerful family in the legendary Forgotten Realms city of Baldur’s Gate. The goal is to grow their family’s prestige by building new businesses within the nine districts of the city and gaining the favor of three main factions: the Council of Four, the Flaming Fist mercenary company and the local Thieves’ Guild.

Each game takes about 90 minutes to play and involves placing buildings (such as special keeps, gates, and watchtowers) in order to gain influence cubes that can be used for further expansion. While players will have to outwit and out scheme the other families, they’ll also face hordes of monsters that periodically attack the city, requiring temporary alliances between players in order to survive. The most powerful family gains control of the city and win the game.

Notably, the game is created by acclaimed Australian designer Matthew Dunstan, who is perhaps best known for the mythological game Elysium and is fairly well regarded among the board game community.

Final Thoughts

WizKids has done a fantastic job with some of their recent board game offerings, and bringing on an award-winning designer like Matthew Dunstan on board seems like a smart decision. The concept also sounds engaging and marks a welcome departure from the miniature skirmish approach we’ve seen with other recent WizKids titles like Onslaught and Trials of Tempus.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on Builders of Baldur’s Gate in the days ahead and will update this page with more information as it becomes available.
